Viola Davis talks her historic 2015 Emmy win

Viola Davis talks her historica 2015 Emmy win

“How To Get Away With Murder” star Viola Davis took home an Emmy Award at the 67th annual Emmys this weekend in a historic win in the outstanding lead actress in a drama series category. She was up against some pretty stiff competition, but emerged victorious.

When accepting the award, she said, “I see a line and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. I can’t seem to get there now. I can’t seem to get over that line. But let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anything else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. Here’s to all the writers, awesome people.”

She went on to thank Halle Berry, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington and Meagan Good. She added, “People that have redefined what it means to be a beautiful, sexy, leading woman…to be black.”

Congratulations to Viola Davis on her Emmy win!

Viola Davis Was A Dumpster Diver For Food As A Kid

Viola Davis Was A Dumpster Diver For Food As A Kid

Viola Davis was recognized at Variety’s Power of Women event for her work with the Hunger Is campaign, but it’s a story that hits all too close to home for the actress. As a kid, she was poverty stricken, so to make a difference for others’ lives in this day and age means a great deal.

She revealed during her speech, “I was one of the 17 million kids in this country who didn’t know where the next meal was coming from, and I did everything to get food. I have stolen for food. I have jumped in huge garbage bins with maggots for food. I have befriended people in the neighborhood, who I knew had mothers who cooked three meals a day for food, and I sacrificed a childhood for food and grew up in immense shame.”

“I didn’t decide to join the Hunger Is campaign to save the world,” Davis said. “I didn’t. I set out to save myself. It has been the joy of my life to be able to start this campaign and know that that little girl with the ponytail and all the children like her — 17 million, 21 families in this country that have to be in food assistance programs — that all that can be eradicated. They can go about their business of being who they are and not sit in front of an SAT like I did, falling asleep because I was hungry. And not befriending people just because they know their mother makes banana bread after school. And jumping in trash bins. No one’s childhood should be spent like that.”

In Variety’s cover story, Davis said, “I always say that the little girl who is hungry is always with me. I feel like why not use any kind of power I have to serve. There’s a famous saying that ‘to serve is to love.’ I don’t want my tombstone to just say I was a series regular and Oscar nominee.”

Her childhood was sad, but at least she is in a place now to where she can help others who are going through the same thing. Kudos to her for taking the initiative!

Viola Davis: ‘I Used To Search Trash Bins For Food’

Viola Davis: 'I Used To Search Trash Bins For Food'

Viola Davis said that she was always ashamed to talk about her childhood, but is now opening up about the conditions of which she grew up. She revealed, “I was one of those kids who grew up hungry. I’m 48 years old now, and it’s only been recently that I can admit that I would jump in trash bins looking for food and I would steal from the corner store because I was hungry. I would fall asleep in school on a daily basis because we had nothing.”

She said that she never had friends over because “my house was a condemned building – it was boarded up and infested with rats.

People has more details:

Now partnering with the Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Davis is spearheading the campaign for Hunger Is to raise awareness and funds to fight childhood hunger.

“We have an image of hunger that comes from Africa, but this is America,” Davis adds. “And unless your belly is distended we don’t have an image of what hunger looks like here.”

Food programs like Hunger Is were instrumental in helping Davis achieve her dreams and goals. “I am the first generation of my family to go to college. Those programs made all the difference for me,” says the actress, who has five siblings. “It’s been cathartic for me because I always had a lot of shame with going in the garbage dumps that had maggots in it, too. It has brought healing in my life to be able to talk about it.”

Good for her for trying to make a difference in other people’s lives!

The gorgeous ladies and gentlemen of the 2013 SAG Awards!!

There must have been something in the air, because most of the woman at last night’s SAG Awards looked absolutely GORGEOUS! It seemed like most of them looked better last night, then they did at the Golden Globes! I loooooved all of the navy blue, black and white that we saw. I’m going to be posting a bunch of pics, so let’s get started!

Jennifer Lawrence was the talk of the night, not only for winning the award for her performance in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, but also because the actress was suffering from walking pneumonia! For being so sick, she looks pretty darn good! Jennifer wore a gorgeous blue Dior Haute Couture gown, and was dripping in Chopard diamonds.

Naomi Watts looked amazing in a gorgeous gray lace Marchesa gown, Salvatore Ferragamo clutch and beautiful Faberge earrings. Beautiful!

Jessica Chastain might have lost out to Jennifer Lawrence in the best actress category, but she certainly looked amazing! The Zero Dark Thirty actress wore a skin-tight red Alexander McQueen gown, and a Water by Harry Winston necklace. Her hair looked beautiful and soft as well!

Amy Poehler decided to glam it up on the red carpet, wearing a tight Zuhair Murad gown with black beads.

Sofia Vergara showed off her curves in all the right ways in her white Donna Karan Atelier white lame gown, with white platforms and dripping in Neil Lane diamonds. Gorgeous!

Amanda Seyfried looked STUNNING in a navy Zac Posen gown, and a Lorraine Schwartz pendant. I love the blue on her. With her complexion, eyes and hair, the blue looked amazing on her, making her one of my favorites for the night!

A dress that I didn’t like too much when I first saw it, but then it grew on me, is Marion Cotillard’s blue and white Dior Haute Couture dress. I didn’t know what I thought about the bow, but after I spent some time checking it out, I decided I liked it a lot! Maybe it’s just because I love her – she’s so beautiful!

Jennifer Garner had another one of my favorite looks of the night, wearing a gold Oscar de la Renta gown, and David Webb jewelry. The actress was on hand to support her husband Ben Affleck, who picked up an award for ‘Argo’.

Helen Hunt looked gorgeous in this silver beaded gown by Romona Keveza, and a Neil Lane choker. She looks totally beautiful!

Michelle Dockery, who stars in ‘Downton Abbey’ (one of MY FAVORITE TV shows) looked stunning in a simple, black satin dress, with sheer cutouts on the side. Love her!

13-year-old Kiernan Shipka from ‘Mad Men’ looks twice her age in this ’60s inspired beaded Oscar de la Renta dress, with Forevermark Diamonds and silver sandals. She’s growing up to be such a beautiful young woman!

Nicole Kidman also wore navy, wearing a Vivienne Westwood Couture column gown with jewelry by Fred Leighton. I’m not a huge fan of her dress, but she does look pretty.

Anne Hathaway wore a black Giambattista Valli couture dress which I’m not such a huge fan of. I think the top is beautiful, but the bottom is one hot mess (in my opinion). Anne won the award for Best Supporting Actress, which many say makes her a sho-in for the Oscar. We’ll see!

Below are MANY more actresses and actors from last night, but I couldn’t name them all one-by-one or this post would have been a beast! Check out all the pictures from last night below!
