Jessica Simpson isn’t avoiding her 28th birthday on Thursday – she’s already started celebrating.

The singer – joined by close friends and family – indulged in her favorite cupcake flavor, red velvet, from Crumbs bakery.

For dinner, Jessica and on-again beau Tony Romo went to Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas, where they met up with her pregnant sister Ashlee and husband Pete Wentz.

At one point, Ashlee and Jessica got on stage to sing with The Copycats, a cover band that was playing. The band serenaded Jessica with “Happy Birthday.”

Following dinner, Jessica and Romo hit Key Club in West Hollywood to see Steel Panther (formerly known as Metal Skool).

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback even tried his hand at singing the Guns n’ Roses hit “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to Jessica and the crowd.

In January, Romo belted out Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” to the singer.

Speaking for the first time about reports that Joe Simpson was interfering with his relationship with Jessica Simpson and his business affairs – and that his parents did not approve of or get along with the Simpson family – Tony Romo released a statement to People saying, “It’s all laughable.”

Romo, 28, and Simpson, 27, – who spent the past couple of days in Dallas (where they recently had a romantic dinner date), and boarded a plane for a weekend on the West Coast – have been dogged by rumors that her father has been meddling in their nearly seven-month-old courtship.

In his statement, Romo insisted that characterization is “so far from the truth.”

A source also confirmed that Romo’s father, Ramiro, went to the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga., with Joe Simpson earlier this year and “had a great time.”

Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo are back ”on,” but a college pal of the Dallas Cowboys quarterback tells me it’s Romo who’s calling all the plays.

”He did agree to go to [sister Ashlee's] wedding — keeping his promise to Jessica,” Romo’s Eastern Illinois alum chum told me. ”But he made it super-clear that if they were to give it another go, her dad had to seriously back off.”

Joe Simpson has long been seen as an overbearing presence, as he managed both his daughters’ careers. While clearly successful, Simpson has earned a reputation as being a guy extremely difficult with whom to work.

My source says Romo has told Jessica their renewed relationship is ”a trial thing,” dependent on Daddy Joe ”leaving them alone” and stifling his tendency to tell Romo how to run his life, career and endorsement deals.

Romo and Jessica Simpson have been seen together looking happy in recent days, after the solo vacation Jessica took in Mexico following Ashlee’s marriage to Fall Out Boy rocker (and ex-North Shore resident) Pete Wentz.

It appears Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo have smoothed out their rough patch.

After a brief split, the pair reunited in Dallas for Memorial Day weekend.

Simpson and Romo shared a corner booth at N9Ne steakhouse on Saturday night according to Alan Peppard of the Dallas Morning News – the columnist who was first to report on the couple’s split.

According to Peppard the pair noshed on steak (for him) and a burger (for her) – and stopped to say hello to another diner with a baby girl on their way out.

On Sunday, Simpson and Romo took in brunch at Sneaky Pete’s in Lewisville, Texas, sources say.

Simpson sported a Dallas Cowboys cap while leaving Cabo San Lucas on Thursday.

The singer had been vacationing with her parents, (sans Romo) since her sister tied the knot on May 17.

What’s going on with Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo? While rumors of a split continue to swirl, the two attended Ashlee Simpson’s private weekend nuptials – looking anything but broken up.

Simpson and her NFL-star beau were spotted together Friday on a sushi run in L.A., and later he was by her side again during Ashlee’s rehearsal dinner, held at Jessica’s Beverly Hills home.

“They were very cozy and cute together,” said a source close to the couple, slamming Internet reports that Simpson was devastated to learn that her ex, John Mayer, has taken up with Jennifer Aniston. “She’s definitely not mourning John Mayer! She was in an amazing mood and so happy her sister was getting married.”

As for Saturday’s wedding and Alice In Wonderland-themed reception, Romo continued to shower the elder Simpson, 27, with attention, said the source.

“They were kissing and holding hands throughout the night,” added the insider. “He was very sweet to her. They were very much a couple.”

For the record, Jessica’s rep, Cindi Berger, has called the breakup talk “not true.”

While reps for the Texan twosome have been busy denying the split, a source close to the Romo camp said that their relationship has hit a “rough patch” but might not be totally over just yet.

After all, he apparently already had plans to get down on one knee for the songstress, and just recently she referred to him as her “future husband” in Glamour magazine.

According to our inside source, Tony was organizing an “intimate dinner for friends and family” to take place in Texas within the next few weeks in anticipation of announcing his engagement to the eldest Simpson sister.

“Every couple has their problems; we’re hoping that they’ll have a break and work it all out,” the source said. Calls to Simpson’s rep were not returned.

So while Romo’s initial matrimonial plans seem to have been put on the back-burner, Jess and Tony are apparently still “talking.”

Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson may be done, but her dad still wants the quarterback to “support the family” at Ashlee’s weekend wedding.

“Joe has called Tony and asked him to come to show support for the wedding,” a source tells Usmagzine.com.

It’s unclear if Romo accepted Joe’s request, but he’s scheduled to fly into L.A. over the weekend.

Romo wasn’t present at a bachelor party Joe threw for Pete and a few of his pals at Mr. Chow’s on Thursday night. E! reports a steady supply of beer and wine was brought to their table. After the celebration, Joe picked up the $1,000 tab!

(Back at Ashlee’s parents’ Encino, California, home, Jessica and mom Tina threw a bachelorette party for Ashlee that E! reports was a “mellow affair.” About a dozen of Ashlee’s closest family members and friends attended the backyard event, decorated with balloons.)

Ashlee (who is pregnant) and her fiancé Pete Wentz are tying the knot on Saturday. Big white tents were being set up at her parents’ home on Thursday.

“Proper invites have not been sent out but instead guests have been given a save the date notice,” a source told Us.

The rehearsal dinner – described by the source as “an intimate affair” for “family and close friends only” – will take place on Friday.
