The record-breaking $55.7 million earned by Sex and the City on its opening weekend – the most ever made by an R-rated comedy – not only stunned industry observers but has also taken its star and producer Sarah Jessica Parker by surprise.
“To be No. 1 is unexpected,” Parker, 43, told People at Sunday night’s MTV Movie Awards. “Beyond that, it would be greedy for us to think about, talk about” how much it might make.
The weekend’s second-place movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, has so far taken in $216.9 million. This weekend, it trailed Sex with a still impressive $46 million at the box office, according to industry estimates.
As for fans’ reactions to her movie, which comes four years after the adored HBO series finished a run that began in 1998, Parker says she is pleased. “They had to have barricades in New York for the audiences,” she notes. “People have been really enthusiastic, people have been really nice.”

Sarah Jessica Parker has slammed the paparazzi for following her every move, making her life feel like a “spy movie”.
The 43-year-old star claims she, husband Matthew Broderick and even their five-year-old son James Wilkie, are constantly chased for photo-opportunities.
Parker says, “Photographers moved into apartments next door to us and we really found ourselves kind of living like a spy movie… I feel like they think they have to be there. Like they punch in or something.”

Sarah Jessica Parker will make a second Sex and the City movie - if she can find a balance between her careers as a mother and actress.
Positive early reviews of the new film - an adaptation of the hit TV series - have prompted the 43-year-old to consider following it up with a sequel - but only if it doesn’t drag her away from young James Wilkie, her son with actor husband Matthew Broderick.
When grilled on Good Morning America on Thursday, Parker said, “You’d have to ask my son… He’d have to be willing to let me be that diligent…
“This last experience has been two years, and it’s been the real last year of my life professionally. And I’ve had to figure out how to make certain that he is well and good. But I’ve been absent in a lot of ways and it’s time for me not to be for a while.”
But she admits the real decision will be based on the first movie’s box office success: “Honestly, the truth of the matter is I think we’ve felt so privileged to arrive at this day, that we have not uttered the word (sequel). I feel it’s really out of our hands. I don’t know.”

Sarah Jessica Parker has let it slip that the new Sex and the City movie might not be for real - literally.
The actress, who plays New York socialite and writer Carrie Bradshaw in the much-anticipated film adaptation of the hit TV series, admits fans of the show might be in for a shock when the truth is revealed.
Refusing to be drawn into talking about a rumored death in the new film, which opens on Friday, Parker says, “I’m so reluctant to answer that… I am fairly certain there is no death.”
But she turned cryptic when asked if her character’s marriage, which is alluded to in trailers for the movie, really does take place.
Speaking to Los Angeles DJ Ryan Seacrest, Parker said, “It’s very unclear if that’s a dream sequence… It looks as if Carrie might be but it’s not clear to me, even still, if that was a dream sequence or not.
“I’m trying to be clever and stealth about not giving too much away.”

Matthew Broderick hates shopping trips with his actress wife Sarah Jessica Parker - because she is constantly hounded by autograph-hunting fans.
The Stepford Wives star admits trips to New York’s famous shopping districts often turn into a nightmare, because everyone wants to speak to his superstar wife - especially Sex And The City enthusiasts.
But the actor insists he isn’t bothered that his wife is more popular than he is - because his low-profile allows him to disappear into the background without facing harassment from fans.
He says, “My wife gets asked for her autograph more than me. When you’re on TV, that’s serious fame. I have never got to that. It happens when we go shopping. She is bothered all day, basically. I sit in the background. At least I can go about my business.”
