Penelopez Cruz is amazed she passed her school exams – because she hardly listened in lessons.
The Volver star admits she paid little attention to her studies but was so academically gifted, she sailed through her exams.
She tells the New York Daily News, “I was good (at school) but I was surprised because I didn’t put too much time in. I was always dreaming about the things I wanted to do when I was older, like acting. I still don’t know why or how I passed because I literally put no time in. But I did actually enjoy every subject. Except mathematics.”

Scarlett Johansson has ruined the dreams of her many male admirers – by branding her onscreen lesbian kiss with Penelope Cruz “the least sexy thing ever”.
The pair had to pucker up for their roles in director Woody Allen’s forthcoming movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
But Johansson admits it was the most awkward of all her onscreen clinches.
She says, “There were 60 crewmen eating salami sandwiches. It really was the least sexy thing you can ever imagine.”

Penelope Cruz’s naked scenes in new film Elegy were all shot behind closed doors.
The actress strips for intimate moments with her onscreen lover Ben Kingsley, and director Isabel Coixet insisted everyone left the set for the awkward part of the shoot.
Cruz reveals, “Nobody else but the director was in the room. She was operating the camera and we could hear her breathing. There was nobody else on the set ever. The set was lit by the director of photography and Isabel operated the camera. Then it was just the sound person, myself and Ben.”
And the intimate setting helped Cruz through one of the toughest scenes she has ever had in a movie: “Telling Kepesh (Kingsley’s character) that my character (Consuela) had cancer was the most terrifying scene for me in that movie. It helped for such an emotionally exhausting scene that there were only four people there on the set.”

Penélope Cruz tells W magazine about her inner ‘monster’:
“I’m always finding very tricky and hidden ways to sabotage any beautiful moment. And it’s something so internal that I don’t think even my friends or family can catch me doing it. But I catch myself doing it. I’ve had that battle since I was a little girl. It’s like, Uh-oh, here it is again, the monster! Go away and leave me alone!”
ON FACING HER FEARS…
“I try not to run away from things because I’m scared of them. When you feel you have to say something to someone, and your heart starts going fast because it could be controversial, I always vote for saying it. With time, you get more at peace with it. I used to get very upset about it, and very angry at myself. But now, when it comes, I just send it away.”

ON THE ‘CELEBRITY GOSSIP MILL’…
“I think it’s disgusting. It’s dangerous and nasty, and bad for our society in so many ways. And it’s getting worse every day. It affects me directly, but I really believe that this culture of gossip affects our society on a much deeper level, on an ethical level. It’s what kids see and hear every day, and it will affect future generations in ways that we cannot even imagine.”

Penelope Cruz is keen to follow best pal Salma Hayek’s example and start a family.
The Spanish star has considered adopting a child for many years and now she’s planning to take the time to get serious.
The actress, who is dating fellow Spaniard Javier Bardem, tells W magazine, “It’s something I’ve thought about a lot… I feel like I still have a lot of time.”
And, before she becomes a mom, Cruz hopes to follow former boyfriend Matthew McConaughey’s lead and start backpacking around the world.
The 34 year old says, “I’ve never done that. I’ve travelled to so many countries for work, and I realize when I leave that I haven’t seen anything.”
