Paul McCartney denies reunion with Ringo Starr

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney has denied he will reunite with his former Beatle bandmate Ringo Starr at an upcoming homecoming gig.

The pair was rumored to be reuniting during McCartney’s performance at the Capital of Culture concert in their native Liverpool this Saturday.

But McCartney insists Starr will not be joining him onstage, saying, “That was never going to be on the cards.”

Instead, McCartney will reportedly collaborate with the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl. Other bands due to play at the event include the Kaiser Chiefs and the Zutons.

Paul McCartney awarded honorary doctorate

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney has received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the prestigious US university Yale.

The former Beatle is an incomparable songwriter and has given a fresh sound to “rock, roll, rhythm and blues”, said the university’s president Richard Levin at Monday’s ceremony.

“Here, there and everywhere, you have pushed the boundaries of the familiar to create new classics,” he said at the Connecticut ceremony, at which British astronomer Martin Rees was among those given an honorary degree.

“From the energy of I Want to Hold Your Hand to the melancholy of Yesterday, to the spirituality of Let It Be, you have played every chord, touched every emotion,” Mr Levin added.

“We admire your musical genius and your generous support of worthy causes.”

The 65-year-old did not make a speech at the Commencement ceremony, during which 3,117 students received their degrees.

Former British prime minister Tony Blair was also in town during the ceremony, as his son Euan is currently studying international relations at the Ivy League college.

He told students at the university’s Class Day that Paul had reminded him that the first record company the Beatles had approached had “rejected them as a band no one would want to listen to”, the Yale Daily News reports.

“Be prepared to fail as well as to succeed, and realize it is failure, not success, that defines character,” he added.

Heather Mills settles her claim with U.K. newspapers

Heather Mills

Heather Mills has settled a long-running privacy claim against a British newspaper, after she launched action against the publication for leaking details of her divorce to Paul Mccartney.

The former model filed the claim against Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper in 2006 after it published the private details.
Mills also filed claims of libel against two other British newspapers – London’s Evening Standard and The Sun.

According to an agreed statement between Mills’ legal team and three U.K. publications, the claims have now been settled “on terms satisfactory to the parties”.

The statement adds, “The terms of the settlement remain confidential and the parties, along with Paul McCartney, will be making no further public statement.”

McCartney and Mills reached a divorce settlement in March when a London court awarded Mills $48.6 million.

The marriage was noted as officially over on Monday when a judge at the High Court in London granted a decree nisi.

The pair began their divorce proceedings in 2006 after they split in May of the same year. They have joint-custody of their four-year-old daughter, Beatrice.

Paul McCartney urges vegetarians to give up fish for Earth Day

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney is calling on fish-eating ‘vegetarians’ to give up all seafood for Earth Day today.

The meat-free former Beatle has issued a statement urging the world to go veggie for the greenest day of the year – and he’s also targeting those who call themselves vegetarians, and then eat fish.
MCCartney wants to remind everyone that the commercial fishing industry is killing off fish species which are vital to the environment.

He says, “Unfortunately, many people seem to think that vegetarians eat fish, but this is not so. When you consider the overfishing, the marine pollution, and the huge damage to our precious oceans that are caused by commercial fishing, it becomes obvious that a (complete) vegetarian lifestyle would greatly improve our environment and help to save our oceans.”

Paul McCartney remembers Linda on the 10th anniversary of her death

Paul McCartney

Just weeks after finalizing his $50 million divorce from Heather Mills, Paul McCartney is making headlines again – this time for an emotional interview about his first wife, Linda, who succumbed to breast cancer 10 years ago.

McCartney tells Britain’s Sunday Times Magazine he can still recall their first meeting, “probably 40 years [ago], at the London nightclub Bag O’ Nails.

“There was an immediate attraction between us,” he said in the article, which coincides with an exhibition of Linda McCartney’s photographs at the James Hyman gallery in central London.

His pick-up line? “My name’s Paul. What’s yours?” McCartney told the paper. “I think she probably recognized me. It was so corny, but I told the kids later that, had it not been for that moment, none of them would be here.”

Fond Memories
The 65-year-old former Beatle has recently been spotted on a Caribbean getaway with American businesswoman Nancy Shevell, but it’s obvious he still cherishes his memories of Linda, a photographer and cookbook author, who died at age 56.

“When we went for a drive, Linda always wanted to get lost,” he reminisced, adding that she was “always very beautiful.” “We would go down to the most obscure places, have a great time, find a little tearoom or a riverbank. She taught me little things like that, to relax and be down to earth.”

He also seemed to make pointed comparisons between Linda and Mills, whose efforts to court the media often backfired. “She didn’t go on TV and say, ‘This is who I am – hello’ and try to ingratiate herself,” he said. “She was just a great person to hang out with: very funny, very smart and very talented … Her priorities were private rather than public.”

On the 10th anniversary of her death, McCartney also recalled Linda’s courageous final days. “She didn’t know she was dying,” he said of his first wife, who had already had chemotherapy. “I talked it over with the doctor and he said, ‘I don’t think she would want to know. She is such a strong, forward-thinking lady and such a positive girl that I don’t think it would do any good.’ ”

In fact, Linda remained active right up to her death on April 17, 1998. “She was fighting right up to the end,” McCartney said. “Even on the day before she dies, she was out on horseback. She loved riding so much. Sometimes she’d get up on her a horse and I’d say, ‘You don’t want to get down, do you?’ She preferred it up there than on the ground.”
