Minnie Driver Talks 'Desperate' Showbiz Parents

Minnie Driver isn’t and never will be a “stage mom” because she feels that parents who throw their kids into the entertainment business are desperate. She plays a stage mom in her new movie “Beyond The Lights”, but says that she is uncomfortable with parents of children in the spotlight.

“It’s really difficult even when you meet lovely parents of children who are in show business,” admitted Driver, who also works closely with a child actor on the set of her NBC sitcom About a Boy. “There is still the fact that they’re not having a childhood. They are out of their element, and in the element of an adult world which is not always appropriate. It seems to me there is always a certain level of desperation that makes a person put a child in that position.”

Driver, a mom to her 6-year-old son Henry, tried to draw the character profile of a stage parent. “That’s an interesting place to start for a character: Someone who’s desperate and conflicted,” she said. “And if that’s overshadowing everything else, it doesn’t matter how nice or kind or empathetic they may be elsewhere. The overriding thing is quite fierce.”

“You love them, of course you love them, but you want this other thing,” she reasoned. “It’s the realm of the hungry ghosts. That’s really interesting for an actor.”

What do you think of Minnie’s thoughts on putting kids into show business?

Minnie Driver is a Philanthropist

Minnie Driver Is Having A Good Morning

About a Boy star, Minnie Driver, makes an effort to use her fame for a greater good, in an effort to teacher her son, Henry, some of the more important lessons in life.  Driver has worked with the organization Oxfam International – which aims to find global solutions for poverty, since she herself was in elementary school.  She spoke with People:

The notions of service and kindness are really, really big in our house.  They’re things that we should all have, whether rich, poor, famous, or not famous. They’re qualities that we should all be fostering in ourselves and in our kids.”

She spoke of a recent trip that she took to Southeast Asia:

“I’ve been particularly interested in the labor rights of women in developing countries, like Cambodia and Thailand.  I worked there and saw what was going on. I visited factories. I can’t tell you about the living conditions of these young women.”

I just really appreciate when high profile people use their fame to bring attention to worthy causes.  It can raise so much awareness for important issues, and it shows that narcissism doesn’t have to run rampant.  It shows a humility that is rare when people have a lot of money and fame thrown at them.

In other news- Driver will appear in the Lifetime adaptation of The Red Tent – a biblical adventure which is SUCH an amazing book- that I had NO idea they were making into a tv film.  It’s listed as being in ‘post production’ – but there is no release date listed.  The book by Anita Diamant is seriously so good.  It’s a biblical tale- but it’s so much more than that- a story about women, camaraderie among women, and child birth and midwifery.  So interesting. Homeland star, Morena Baccarin will also star in the 4-hour mini-series.

Minnie Driver quits Twitter over bikini bullying

Minnie Driver is a beautiful woman and looks great not only for her age, but for ANY age. However, some people didn’t seem to think so and after paparazzi shots of her in a bikini during a recent vacation popped up online, she started receiving nasty messages on Twitter about her body, causing her to leave Twitter for good.

“God some people are horrible,” the About a Boy star tweeted to her 81,000-plus followers. “You try being photographed when you don’t know it’s happening, when you’re on holiday with your kids.” The actress was photographed in Miami with her 5-year-old son Henry, playing in the pool and walking across the beach in a pretty printed bikini.

At 44, the British star looked stunning in the swimsuit, baring her toned physique and six-pack. Despite her impressive physique, some critics still directed negative, body-bullying comments towards the Oscar nominee.

“I’m out of this Twittersphere for a while,” Driver tweeted in response. “It’s too mean sometimes, about your body , about your soul. Not worth it.”

I’ve never really understood why some people get off on being mean to others online – especially to celebrities who you don’t even know, but there you have it. It’s a shame that she felt like she had to leave, but social media can be more trouble than it’s worth, so I’m with Minnie on this one.
