Kyle MacLachlan is convinced his newborn son will be a doctor when he grows up – after the tot tried to help with his own birth.

MacLachlan’s wife Desiree Gruber gave birth to Callum Lyon – their first child – on July 25th.

And the couple was shocked to see the tiny newborn grappling with medical equipment just seconds after he was delivered.

The Desperate Housewives star says, “He grabbed one of the clamps the doctor was using for the umbilical cord. He had it in his little hand for a second. We think maybe he wants to be a doctor.”

The Twin Peaks actor’s mother died of ovarian cancer in 1986.

He’ll front a new public service announcement on behalf of the Callaway Golf Foundation Women’s Cancer Initiative urging women to seek early detection for ovarian cancer.

Desperate Housewives star Kyle MacLachlan and his producer wife Desiree Gruber have welcomed their first child, a boy, the actor’s rep tells People.

Callum Lyon MacLachlan was born Friday in Los Angeles and weighed 8 lbs, 6 oz.

MacLachlan, 49, whose next film is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, and Gruber, 41, an executive producer of Project Runway, have been married for six years.

MacLachlan, who returns to Desperate Housewives this season, told People in May that the couple – who knew they were having a boy – were still trying to settle on a name. The actor said he was excited about fatherhood.

“It’s one of those crazy things,” he said. “I’m having the best time watching her body change. I’m paying attention to little kids now.”

Father-to-be Kyle Maclachlan’s wife Desiree Gruber is expecting a baby boy.

The Desperate Housewives actor, 49, will become a first-time father when wife Gruber gives birth to the couple’s child this summer.

And Maclachlan broke the news of the baby’s sex during a stint as guest host of U.S. morning TV show Live With Regis + Kelly on Friday.

He said, “It’s a boy. I’ve got the golf clubs out already, so we’re going to make him into a little golfer.”

The couple is now on the hunt for a name for their upcoming arrival, though Maclachlan jokes wife Gruber has turned down his first choices.

He laughs, “We’re trying to go through the name thing now. She shot down my first idea: Jethro. She didn’t like that idea.” Maclachan adds of his second choice, “Being from Scotland, he could be like, Macintosh Maclachlan”.

Either way, the actor does have one strict stipulation: “You want a nickname that’s going to be cool.”

Desperate Housewives star  is launching his own wine. The actor has teamed up with a vineyard in Washington state to create a Cabernet called Pursued By Bear.

MacLauchlan told TV host Regis on Thursday’s Live with Regis & Kelly, “I went in with a friend who’s a real wine maker. We made a wine together and it’s going to be released in September. It’s grown up in Washington state. They are producing some fantastic wine up there, so I made a Cabernet with Tim Dunham of Dunham cellars.”

“It’s called Pursued By Bear. I challenge you to forget that name. It’s actually a Shakespearean stage direction from Winter’s Tale. Actors are actually chased off stage by a bear. It’s catchy.”
