Kristin Davis: I’m nothing like Charlotte

Kristin Davis

As women flock to the theaters this weekend to satisfy their itch for Sex–and the City, the cast’s Kristin Davis is opening up about the film, turning 40, and why she considers herself the complete opposite of her character Charlotte.

“I’d love to find someone to fall in love with but I’m not as traditional as Charlotte,” the actress tells Parade.com’s Jeanne Wolf. “I’m not completely marriage-obsessed like Charlotte was. I would definitely like to fall in love with someone and go through life with them.”

Growing up in the South, Kristin says there was definitely pressure to settle down at a young age, but these days she’s holding out for Mr. Right, which perhaps does makes her just a little bit like Charlotte!

“There was a lot of pressure that you marry well and that you marry relatively young,” she says of her Southern upbringing. “If you didn’t you were kind of left out. It made me angry because why was that the be all and end all for a young woman? I think that women should be free to do whatever they want to do. I just haven’t found the right person.”

When SATC, the movie, started filming Kristin, like most of the cast, had already crossed the bit 4-o. But the actress insists she’s ok with where she is.

“I thought I would never hit 40,” she confesses. “I drank a lot as a teenager. It became a real problem for me. I was really shy and I didn’t know how to come out of my shell. I drank for the same reason I love acting–I wanted to feel things and express myself and be free.”

Davis, who says she’s left her drinking days far behind her, looks as good now as she did when Sex and the City premiered, 10 years ago! So how does she do it?

“Doing the movie was a reminder that spending 18 hours a day on those heels is a pretty good work out,” she says. “I always say I’m going to start a fitness regimen. I’ve been a member of a gym and everything but I just don’t work out.”

Good genes aside, Kristin says there’s one thing she’ll never get used to when making films–shooting loves scenes!

“Previous to the getting on the show I was pretty uptight about that stuff,” she admits. “Simulating sex was a strange part of our jobs. There is no debate about that. It’s a strange thing!”

It was also strange for Kristin’s family, who she says avoided subscribing to HBO!

“In the beginning, my parents didn’t even have HBO and they weren’t about to get it because my grandmother lived in the house with them and they didn’t want to her to get a glimpse of her granddaughter in bed with some guy,” Kristin says, adding, “But after she died they subscribed. Then I had to call my mom every week and go, ‘I’m taking my nighty off so don’t watch!’”

Kristin Davis feared she would be dead by 30

Kristin Davis

Kristin Davis09 feared she would be dead by 30 if she didn’t quit drinking.

The actress has spoken openly throughout her career about her battle with alcohol – which she gave up at 22 following a stint in rehab.

Davis, 43, insists her heavy drinking nearly destroyed her, and she is convinced she wouldn’t be alive today if she hadn’t kicked her addiction.

She says, “I really didn’t think I would pass 30. I drank a lot when I was a teenager. I had a fatalistic viewpoint. I miss it (drinking). You don’t go to rehab and then suddenly it goes away.”

Kristin Davis in the July issue of UK Marie Claire

On sex and shopping:

“I’m not really a shopper so that’s the easy one. I have to say definitely good sex. What makes good sex? Oh my god. I think you need to feel free and to feel free you have to really trust the other person. Erm, and you have to have that strange, mysterious chemical connection.”

On not really feeling like an adult:

“I guess, at some point I felt like I would feel like an adult. Certainly it’s very different to be 43 as opposed to when I was young and 43 seemed really, really old.”

On facing her own mortality:

“This is going to sound strange but I really didn’t think I would pass 30. I don’t know why or whatever, I just didn’t. It’s a very weird thing to say, I’m sorry. I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I was drinking so much as a youth. You know, I drank a lot when I was teenager and I don’t drink anymore because that’s when I thought, you know, I’m gonna end up a car wreck. I just had a fatalistic viewpoint of the whole situation at that point.”

On being a former alcoholic:

“Alcoholism is a genetically predisposed disease and it does run in my family. I also think I felt like a misfit. I was in the South, everybody was blonde. (An only child, Kristin’s parents divorced when she was a baby. Adopted by her stepfather, a psychology professor, the family moved Columbia, South Carolina where he worked at the university.) I just didn’t feel like I fitted in. It was sort of my way of fitting. I mean, I don’t know how much you know about the American South but there’s a history of bourbon! People in the South get upset with me when I talk about this. It’s obviously different now but when I was a teenager everything was based on a very kind of elaborate social scene in the South. There were social clubs and high school fraternities and college. You know, I’m kind of shy normally, so I felt like I needed help and then one thing led to another and I was drinking.”

Was it a rebellious thing?

“Not so much because I was still a straight A student. I was pretty good at hiding it so my parents didn’t really know. Of course it came out and they were like, ‘Oh no, what has happened?’ What made me stop? (She was 22 years old when she became teetotal.) I realised it was not going to end well. I got into the acting programme, it was a very challenging, I was hungover and I wasn’t doing so well in my classes. I thought, ‘Do you know what? It’s going to be one or the other. I can’t really have both.”

On the SATC movie Rumours:

“Can I just say, my character doesn’t die. [laughs]. That’s really funny. Oh yeah, we did the Sex And The City movie so we could kill Charlotte. Oh yeah, that’s hysterical. No. Definitely no.”

Kristin Davis turns movie producer

Kristin Davis

Kristin Davis is moving behind the camera for her next big-screen outing – to produce her first movie.

The 43-year-old will follow in the footsteps of her Sex And The City co-star Sarah Jessica Parker – who produced the Hollywood film version of the hit TV series – when she begins work on an as-yet-unnamed romantic comedy.

According to British tabloid reports, Davis will also star in the film.

A source says, “Kristin is just getting the final budgets in place. And she’s chosen her leading man.”

Kristin Davis blasts marriage rumors

Kristin Davis

Kristin Davis has laughed off reports she is in a secret relationship, insisting she only wears a wedding band because she is used to playing married women.

The Sex And The City star, 43, is adamant she is still single and in search of the right partner to wed – despite the ring she frequently wears on her wedding finger.

When asked about the jewelry worn on her left hand, she replied, “Oh, this? I’m not married. It’s just that I’ve played a married character for so long that if I don’t have a ring on this finger I feel a bit weird.”

Kristin Davis was thrilled to return to adult acting

Kristin Davis

Kristin Davis jumped at the chance to reprise her role in Sex and the City: The Movie – because she was fed up with starring in family films.

After the show came to a finish in 2004, the actress, who plays Charlotte York Goldenblatt in the big screen adaptation of the series, struggled to land any challenging parts and was instead forced to accept “mom roles” in such films as Deck The Halls and Shaggy Dog.

She tells Britain’s Now magazine, “They (were) mom roles. There’s not a huge amount of choice for women my age, so it’s not that easy. I had whole scenes in Deck The Halls where I had no lines. I had whole days on Shaggy Dog where my only line was: ‘Shaggy?’ I’d email my manager saying: ‘You have to come over here. I’m losing my mind.’ If I had to do that forever, I’d simply quit acting and work for charity. So when we came back to do this movie, I was like: ‘Thank God, something to do!’”
