Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer may have called it quits.

A source says the pair’s on-again, off-again relationship may have ended sometime within the last week, when Aniston returned from her overseas Marley & Me junket.

“He broke up with her when she got back from her European tour,” the source said.

Aniston’s rep did not immediately comment. Mayer’s rep declined to comment on the singer’s personal life.

But what are their friends saying?

One pal warns that we shouldn’t be quick to assume the two are through for good. As we know, this wouldn’t be the first time they’ve gone their separate ways.

Aniston recently opened up about love and romance to the U.K. magazine You. “Who ever said that every relationship has to last forever? That’s hoping too much,” said Aniston, who turned 40 exactly a month ago. “I think every relationship is a world unto itself.”

As for finding the perfect partner, she said, “I don’t have one and I don’t think it exists.”

Aniston and Mayer went public for the first time at the Oscars at the end of last month. Backstage at the Kodak Theatre, Aniston told Gayle King, who was interviewing them for her pal Oprah’s show, that she was “very happy.” Later in the night, they strolled arm in arm into the Vanity Fair postshow party at the Sunset Tower Hotel.

Most recently, Aniston was spotted on Monday at the same hotel grabbing a bite to eat at the Terrace restaurant. She’ll be jetting to New York City in the spring to shoot The Baster, in which she stars opposite Jason Bateman as an unmarried 40-year-old who decides to have a baby with her best friend.

Mayer, meanwhile, has been in the studio working on a new album.

No wonder Jennifer Aniston received so much affection from John Mayer on Oscar night.

It turns out that while the singer was happy to provide “moral support” to his girl at the Academy Awards, he was also “very, very nervous” about attending.

“It’s not my world, the Oscar thing,” Mayer told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM show Wednesday. “But [Jen] was so sweet to me that night, because you can go from a Grammy winner to a water boy when you walk into the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night.” He added, “While it was really, really fun, the whole thing is very odd to me.”

“I basically stepped into the picture frame of Hollywood,” he explained. “And you have to really be with someone you know has your back in that situation, and she did, and it was really great.”

As for why the normally low-key couple chose such a high-profile event to go so public with their relationship, John told Ryan, “At some point, you feeel comfortable and say this is the choice I want to make. I think a year is a pretty good period of time with which to say, yeah, let’s go have a really good time at the Oscars.”

Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer celebrated Valentine’s Day with a trip to the Bahamas.

The vacation was a present from Mayer, x17online.com reports.

The two left aboard a private jet from Los Angeles late last Thursday night — a day after Aniston’s 40th birthday — and arrived on the island of Eleuthera the next morning, according to x17.

They stayed in a gated, luxurious home on the north of the island – where Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon wed last year.

The two mostly spent their time indoors, the site claims.

The trip was short: Both took off Monday in separate private jets from the island’s main airport.

They shared a passionate kiss and hug as they prepared to part ways.

Says an x17 photographer: “Jen looked really upset to be leaving John.”

On Monday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, John Mayer talks about girlfriend Jennifer Aniston’s new high-tech house — and admits he occasionally sleeps over.

“There is no normal thing in the Aniston house,” he says. “You won’t find a light switch. The light switch is not antiquated.

“There is a six-button light panel. It does everything,” Mayer goes on. “The top button is on and the button right below that one seems to be an air horn, so in the middle of the night, it [can be] very difficult [to sleep].”

Aniston gets confused by her high-tech home, too.

Says Mayer, “The other day, I’m like, ‘This is the most beautiful kitchen of all time. Where is the trash?’” Aniston, he adds, “didn’t know where the trash was.”

DeGeneres then puts Mayer on the hot seat, asking him if he sleeps over.

“Yeah, there are sleepovers, yeah,” he says. “Yes, yes, there are.”

Mayer also opens up about that infamous photo of him wearing a Borat-esque, one-piece bathing suit on his cruise.

“It is not photo-shopped,” he says of the photo. “I sort of get drawn into the vortex when I look at it for too long.

“I have this cruise … and the thing about a cruise is, everybody is supposed to let their hair down a little bit,” he goes on. “I let a lot of hair down, but the fact is, that is something you’re supposed to do for your fans. It’s just plain silly.”

Meanwhile, Aniston was on the DeGeneres’ show Friday and admitted she isn’t nervous about turning 40 on Feb. 11.

“I have to say, really, I feel better than I ever felt in my life,” she said. “I did have a moment, though, over the weekend… I found a really long gray hair, and it kind of flipped me out.

“It’s not my first, but it’s the fact that it was so long,” she said. “I was like … ‘How many others are there and what does that mean?’ It actually brought me to tears, slightly.

DeGeneres then asked who will be going to Aniston’s birthday party Saturday. Aniston said definitely her BFF Courteney Cox.

When DeGeneres held up a photo of Mayer (in a one-piece bathing suit), Aniston said, “I got to tell you, honestly, I almost don’t want to touch it.”

DeGeneres then commented on Mayer’s swimsuit, and Aniston said, “The man’s got balls – what can I say?

“I think he’s funny,” she said, before adding, “let’s put [the photo] down now.”

At Wednesday’s TCA conference in Los Angeles, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler announced that the network is “pretty close to closing our deal” with the singer.

“It’ll be a music variety sketch show,” Tassler said. “It’s being developed now.”

Pressed for specifics, Tassler added, “We’re looking at a couple of things.

“One is it’s sort of a pilot. It could be for a series of specials,” she said. “It could be just for a series. We’re just going to shoot the pilot now and see what we have and make a decision after that.”

The announcement comes months after web rumors began that Mayer has signed on to host a weekly variety show for CBS.
