Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are engaged, a source tells Usmagazine.com.
“They tried to keep it very private and quiet,” the source continues of the couple, who began dating in 2007. (They first met while filming flick Jamon, Jamon in 1992.)
A rep for Cruz, 35, had no comment.
A pal told the New York Daily News, which first reported the story, that Cruz wanted to wed Bardem, 40, to appease Cruz’s Catholic parents — given the persistent rumors that she’s pregnant, which she’s denied.
Cruz once said she wasn’t sure she wanted to be a wife.
“I don’t know if I believe in marriage,” she told Psychology Today in August. “I believe in family, love and children.”
She continued: “When I [have children], I want to do it really well. I want it to be my best project in life.”

Penélope Cruz is a perfectionist in all areas of her profession, something the Spanish-born star admits she carries over into her personal life.
“Every time I make a film, I feel like it’s my first time … I always think they could fire me,” the Oscar winner, 35, tells the August issue of Psychologies magazine in the U.K. “I’ve ruined my own happiness and created problems with my friends because of this tendency. It takes discipline for me to stop worrying.”

She adds, “I have a tendency to become a mother to everyone around me. My brother and sister are always complaining that I’m too protective.”
Someday that might just come in handy. Currently linked to fellow Spaniard Javier Bardem – about whom Cruz would only say, “He’s a wonderful man, a great actor” – she does admit that she definitely desires kids.
“I want to have babies one day but not right now. When I do it I want to do it really well. I want it to be my best project in life,” says Cruz. “I don’t know if I believe in marriage. I believe in family, love and children.”
Appropriately enough, Cruz’s next film is kid-friendly. She voices a gerbil spy named Juarez in Disney’s G-Force, which hits theaters July 31.

Javier Bardem faced a severe backlash in his native Spain after winning an Oscar last year – his countrymen accused him of “selling out”.
Bardem won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a sociopath killer in No Country For Old Men, becoming the first Spanish actor to win the coveted prize.
But he insists he had to work hard to convince Spaniards the recognition he found in the U.S. hadn’t inflated his ego.
He says, “The Spanish are tough. They criticize my work and say I sold out. You want to say, ‘Stop it – you’re a bunch of stupid people.’ But you are never going to be liked by everybody. After the Oscars, I came back to Madrid, where I live. I wanted to get back to the real world. After something like the awards, you’ve changed a little bit, but everyone around you has changed tremendously. You have to bring them back – you have to show that you are the same stupid, limited guy and not this kind of golden boy.”

Javier Bardem was so desperate for cash as a struggling actor he took to an unlikely job – as a stripper.
The Oscar-winning actor was scraping to make ends meet before becoming an international star – but he insists he’s not ashamed about his early days as an exhibitionist.
He says, “I danced one night in a place, there was a club. And they asked for a guy to kind of make a striptease and I did it… It was for ten minutes. I needed money. My mother was there in the audience. She was so proud.”
