Reese stopped by Jake’s house yesterday and picked him up.  So were those breakup stories just rumors? If they’ve been seeing each other this whole time, they’re awfully sneaky!

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal’s springtime romance has ended.

“They just recently broke up. It’s totally and completely over,” a source in Witherspoon’s circle tells PEOPLE.

“Reese was the one who had to do it,” says the source. “She just got out of a divorce and was so concerned with her family, she just didn’t have the time for him and he really demanded that.”

Adds the source: “They’re still friends. Things are fine, but it was a clean break – [there's] no chance of getting back together.”

Reps for both actors did not immediately return calls for comment.

Witherspoon, 31, and Ryan Phillippe, 32, who confirmed their split in October after seven years of marriage, have two children: daughter Ava, 7, and son Deacon, 3. The actress started dating Gyllenhaal, 26, her costar in the upcoming CIA thriller Rendition, in the spring.

Although they were careful to avoid the spotlight, they were spotted March 23 dining with two other couples at L.A.’s Il Sole and “being playful,” an observer said at the time.

Although the pair didn’t have much screen time together while filming Rendition for eight weeks in Morocco, during a reshoot in L.A., “Jake went and reintroduced himself to Reese,” a source close to both actors told PEOPLE.

From there, said a friend of Witherspoon’s, “Things slowly progressed, but it was never something she thought would happen from the start. She just kind of developed this little crush over time.”

Jake Gyllenhaal is deciding whether he’ll attempt to climb a peak even more treacherous than Brokeback Mountain – Broadway.

The Oscar nominee, 26, is mulling over the starring role in the political stage drama Farragut North, to open this fall, the show’s producer, Jeffrey Richards, confirms to PEOPLE. Gyllenhaal’s decision is expected by the end of this week.

News of Gyllenhaal’s prospective Broadway debut was first reported in the New York Post, which said a private reading of the work was held last week.

Gyllenhaal would play an idealistic communications director for an unorthodox presidential candidate said to be based on 2004 Democratic candidate Howard Dean. The play’s title refers to the Washington, D.C., metro stop located near the offices of several lobbyists, the Post reports.

According to The New York Times, the show’s creator, Brooklyn-based Beau Willimon, 29, is “a playwright [who] worked on Howard Dean’s presidential campaign.”

Gyllenhaal is himself no stranger to politics. In 2004 he participated in the Rock the Vote campaign, to help young people register to vote, and he campaigned for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.

Reese Witherspoon and her secret boy-toy Jake Gyllenhaal tried to have a secret rendezvous. Jake and Reese arrived separately to an unkown house in Venice, CA and were very careful not to be seen together outside the place. They spent a couple of hours inside and then both left in different cars with Jake leading the way and Reese following behind. They both had their cell phones glued to their ears and had big smiles on their faces as Jake led the way back to Reese’s gated estate.

After three months of dating, Hollywood’s most low-key couple is still going strong!

Reese Witherspoon, 31, and Jake Gyllenhaal, 26, who met last summer on the set of Rendition, had a rendezvous following a May 25 visit to a doctor’s office in Culver City, California.

After the appointment, the pair hopped into separate cars and headed to Witherspoon’s house.

“Jake put his hand out of the sunroof and was waving, “says an eyewitness. “They looked totally in love.”

That’s the impression he’s giving pals: “Jake said he’s found someone who knows how to look out for both of them, and not just themselves,” a Gyllenhaal source tells Us. “Reese is more attentive than anyone else he knows.”
