Erika Christensen defends Scientology in You Tube video, says “We don’t worship rabbits”

I totally forgot that Erika Christensen was a lifelong Scientologist! I wish I hadn’t remembered, either, because I think Scientologists are completely LOONEY and now I like her a little less. So sue me. Scientology just creeps me right out – and I’m not sure how anyone defends such a crazy belief system. I have a love/hate relationship with her character on ‘Parenthood’. Half the time I want to slap her, but the other half I really like her. PS: How great is that picture above. Perfect for the post!

Here’s more from Huff Po:

Scientology is making headlines again with the release of Lawrence Wright’s new book “Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief,” and in the wake of the church’s bad publicity, “Parenthood” actress Erika Christensen is defending the controversial religion.

While appearing on her co-star Joy Bryant’s web series, the 30-year-old actress and lifelong member of the church took the opportunity to clear up misconceptions about the religion she calls a “huge part” of her life.

“[People assume] we’re some kind of closed group and we’re just the Hollywood religion … and we worship rabbits. I don’t actually know how many people think that,” she joked.

Scientologists don’t worship rabbits, but members do believe that 75 million years ago, Xenu, dictator of the “Galactic Confederacy,” sent billions of frozen souls on spaceships from his overpopulated planet to the bases of volcanoes on Earth. When the volcanoes erupted, the scattered souls or “thetans” found their way into human bodies, and their emotional issues haunt their human hosts, and Scientologists believe they must be purged through an expensive confessional practice called auditing.

Christensen grew up in the church and says she would have no problems introducing her future children to the religion.

“I would expose to them, like, this is what I do, which is how my parents did it, because my parents are Scientologists,” she said, adding, “If I had to sum it up, the goal of Scientology is giving the person back to themselves. Like, your own power of choice.”

Like, totally.

These are pictures from some event Erika attended last week.

Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and more at Elle Magazine’s Women in Hollywood Tribute!

Nine of Hollywood’s hottest female stars were honored last night at Elle Magazine’s 18th Annual Women in Hollywood tribute.

The women celebrated this year included Barbra Streisand, Jennifer Aniston, Freida Pinto, Evan Rachel Wood, Naomi Watts, Michelle Pfeiffer, Viola Davis, Stacey Snider and Elizabeth Olsen, who received the Calvin Klein Collection Emerging Star award.

The clear winner of the night was Streisand, who picked up the L’Oreal Paris Legend award. Most of the women at the event looked up to and were inspired by the singer/actress’ career. Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow, who directed “The Hurt Locker,” called Streisand “a world icon” and “somebody who has mastered virtually every art form imaginable: directing, acting, composing, singing, producing, writing,” as she introduced her on stage.

Fellow nominee Aniston told the singer that she loved her, and Pinto added that she was honored just to be “sharing the same oxygen” with Streisand.

“You’re a legend not only in Hollywood but literally all over the world,” Pinto said to Streisand. “I can say that because I come from India.”

In her acceptance speech, Streisand told the crowd that only seven percent of the top 250 films were directed by women, and she encouraged those in the audience to continue to break barriers in the entertainment industry. “Let’s be bold and don’t wait for the phone to ring,” she said. “Create your own material. Tell me a story.”

Lots of pictures from last night’s 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards held at The Santa Monica Beach in Santa Monica!

‘Black Swan’ dominated the Independent Spirit Awards last night. Best film, best director and best actress all went to the psychological thriller. Is that an indication of how tonight’s Oscars are going to go?

Could Natalie Portman be any cuter?

According the the NY Mag, the awards ceremony was held on the beach – and everyone absolutely FROZE.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards, held in a beachside tent Saturday during unusually cold Santa Monica weather, were dominated by wins by Black Swan. And for all the travails the nominated filmmakers might have experienced on the path here (lack of funding, last-minute casting, no trailers to protect Nicole Kidman from the paparazzi, as Rabbit Hole director John Cameron Mitchell told us), these troubles seemed overshadowed by the day’s frigid wind. When asked how it felt to win the Best Director award, Black Swan’s Darren Aronofsky said, “F’in cold.” The weather got lots of mentions during the telecast, hosted by Joel McHale, and even more attention as the shivering winners made their way to the billowy press tent. It was so cold that Natalie Portman was seen sporting not one, but two jackets over her knee-length, summer-y dress during the show. “I’m from New York, so I was expecting to come here like, ‘It’s bikini time,’” said Lena Dunham, a winner for Best First Screenplay for Tiny Furniture. “It’s not bikini time.”
