Christina Applegate Is ‘Ready to Hug Again’

Christina Applegate has been bravely outspoken about her battle with breast cancer. But, the Samantha Who? star reveals, she wasn’t always so forthcoming.

“I went back to work for about five weeks right after the second surgery,” Applegate tells Ellen DeGeneres on Friday’s show. She adds, “I didn’t tell anyone [about the diagnosis].”

Actually, she did share the news with a few members of her inner circle.

“I told my make-up and hair people and people that are really close to me …,” she explains. “I had a protection wall [on set], so that no one was pushing me.”

The 36-year-old was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer earlier this year. She is now cancer free after undergoing a double mastectomy.

She and DeGeneres recently bonded at the Stand Up to Cancer fund-raiser. (The event also featured fellow cancer sufferer Patrick Swayze and megastars like Jennifer Aniston.)

“[I'm feeling] so much better than the last time I saw you,” she tells the talk show host. “I was really … afraid of people hugging me. People are really huggy at those things.”

“I apologize,” DeGeneres says. “I hugged you.”

But these days, Applegate inists, “I’m good. I’ll grab ya.”

DeGeneres responds with a promise: “I’m going to hug you a bunch during this commercial break.”

Applegate ‘Lost It’ When She Met Her Surgeon

wenn5113907.jpg

It was a delayed reaction to having heard her medical diagnosis – that she had breast cancer – that made Christina Applegate cry, she says.

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Samantha Who? star, 36, spoke candidly with Oprah Winfrey on a special installment of The Oprah Winfrey Show set to air Tuesday. On it, Applegate discusses her recent radical mastectomy.

“So you just made the decision that you were gonna let both go,” Winfrey asks the actress, in reference to the decision to have both breasts removed.

“Yep. I was just gonna let them go,” says Applegate, who then says, when asked if she cried, “You know, I – at first I didn’t. And then when I met with my doctor and I told him that was my decision and he brought the surgeon in and it was like the flood gates just opened up and I – I lost it.

In terms of first receiving her diagnosis (something “you don’t want to hear … ever”), Applegate recalls the doctor’s words as, ” ‘It came back positive.’ And I just – like right now I’m sitting here shaking remembering that moment. As you guys know, you don’t think it’s gonna happen to me.”

Mother Also Had Cancer, Twice
Applegate appears on the program with Nancy Komen, who started the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which supports breast-cancer research and is named for Nancy Komen’s sister, who died of the disease in 1980.

As she has in the past, Applegate also spoke of her 67-year-old mother, who twice survived breast cancer and whom her daughter refers to as ” a quiet warrior.”

“She’s had it twice and there was this part of me that sort of knew that the other shoe was gonna drop,” Applegate tells Winfrey.

Lance Bass: Christina Applegate will save lives

Christina Applegate

Breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate will save the lives of thousands of women inspired by her story, insists her longtime friend Lance Bass.

The former ‘N Sync star maintains Applegate is “doing great” and “totally, fully recovering” after undergoing a double mastectomy following her diagnosis with the deadly disease last month.

And Bass, 29, is adamant the Samantha Who? star’s battle will in turn encourage scores of women to undergo early testing for the illness.

He tells People.com, “Now she has a voice and she can use it for something good. Just opening her mouth about it is going to make thousands of women go get checked out. It will probably save many lives.”

Applegate has announced plans to launch a campaign to raise money for MRI scans for women at risk of contracting breast cancer.

Christina Applegate is free of breast cancer!

Christina Applegate

Just a month after being diagnosed with breast cancer, actress Christina Applegate is perfectly healthy and cancer-free, she told Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America” in an exclusive interview that will air Tuesday.

“I’m clear,” the star of “Samantha Who?” said. “Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. … They got everything out so I’m definitely not going to die from breast cancer.”

Applegate, who started getting mammograms six years ago after she turned 30, said the cancer was found through the second of two MRI tests as a follow-up from a biopsy she had last year.

During the interview she laughs about her reaction to the initial diagnosis, but perhaps only to offset the fear she felt then.

“I was so mad and I — I just remember I was — I was just shaking,” she says.
