Anne Hathaway struggled to cope with fame - and escaped the limelight by studying for a degree.
The Get Smart star shot to fame in 2001 after appearing in Disney hit The Princess Diaries, and followed up a successful stint in the teen market by starring in Ella Enchanted in 2004.
But Hathaway found it difficult to adapt to media scrutiny at such a young age, and her personal life suffered - prompting her to take time out from the spotlight to attend New York University.
The 25-year-old explains, “I was a mess in some ways and that had nothing to do with my choice of career. I was the luckiest girl in the world when I got the Princess Diaries films, but all the driven behavior that you need to be successful as a teenager didn’t help me when it came to my private life and social situations.”
She adds, “So going to university helped me a lot. I used to worry too much and take myself too seriously.”

Anne Hathaway is looking for love - but refuses to date a fellow actor.
The Get Smart star split from Raffaello Follieri in June, shortly before he was arrested on suspicion of unscrupulous business dealings.
And while Hathaway admits she is ready for a new relationship, she has ruled out dating a co-star.
She says, “I try not to date where I work. It makes life easier. Besides, the possibility has never really arisen. I don’t say no to anybody, because I’d hope that people wouldn’t say no to me because I’m an actor - but they’d have to be a pretty extraordinary.”

Anne Hathaway confesses her split from Italian Raffaello Follieri was for the best - because it has made her a stronger person.
The Devil Wears Prada star ended her relationship with Follieri in June, shortly before he was arrested on suspicion of unscrupulous business dealings.
And Hathaway has no regrets about her decision.
She says, “The worst thing that happens to you can be the best thing for you, if you don’t let it get the best of you.”
And the star still hopes to marry one day.
She adds, “I’ve always wanted a family. I’m not one of those people who says ‘What’s the point of marriage?’ (I’d like to) find someone you can be yourself around, who makes you laugh, who challenges you in a good way, and where you just speak off each other. My parents have been married more than 25 years, with all the glory and all the pain you can imagine, but they’ve stayed together. I want a strong marriage like that.”
Follieri has been charged with a dozen counts of federal wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering and will remain in jail until he can post $21 million bail.

Anne Hathaway has taken aim at actors who alter their faces with plastic surgery - insisting film stars need flaws to express emotion.
The Princess Diaries actress once felt so insecure about her looks, she considered having a nose job.
But the 25-year-old, now the face of beauty giant Lancome, is happy with her imperfections - because they lend her face character.
She says, “I wanted a nose job, but now, my nose is what lets me change my face a lot - and I can be glamorous as Agent 99 (in Get Smart), then look rough as a drug addict for (director) Jonathan Demme (in forthcoming movie Rachel Getting Married). Your face needs to have character if you’re an actor - otherwise you’re just a face.”

When Anne Hathaway wanted to get into killer shape for her upcoming movie, ‘Bride Wars,’ she turned to celeb trainer David Kirsch, who’s also honed the bods of ferosh celebs like Heidi Klum. In the new issue of Glamour, on stands Aug. 5, David and Anne reveal his fat-busting tricks, like oblique crunches and something called the “platypus walk”?
It “lifts the butt up a good inch higher, working the inner thighs,” he says.
To give Anne lean legs, David says he had her do 15 plié toe squats, lifting heels off floor while feet are turned slightly out, along with single-leg dead lifts, a standing move where you raise one leg behind you, and switch lunges, a tricky sort of jumping lunge.
“She really wanted to sweat,” he said of her determination. “It de-stressed her.”
The founder of the Madison Square Club and author of the Ultimate New York Body Plan, David also helped re-sculpt Heidi’s post-baby tummy. For Heidi, he recommended numerous reps of oblique ab crunches and mountain climber reps, using a medicine ball and alternating legs in a push-up like position.
But his craziest exercise is the platypus walk, a squat-like walk done while holding a medicine ball over one’s head.

Far from singing the blues over her recent romance troubles – Anne Hathaway is instead belting out karaoke songs.
Hathaway, 25, took turns behind the microphone at a karaoke session in Cape May, N.J. on Monday night. The Get Smart actress hit the Martini Beach restaurant on the Jersey shore with friends and family – feeling the need to sing Journey.
“She was the life and soul of the party,” said karaoke host Terry O’Brien.
Hathaway split with embattled Italian businessman Raffaello Folleri. But it was all smiles on Monday as the actress was one of the first singers of the evening crooning Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”
Hathaway danced around the tables during other songs before retaking the microphone for K.T. Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See” (a song featured in her movie The Devil Wears Prada.
“Don’t put this on YouTube,” she told O’Brien.
