Carrie has been cast in her first studio movie, “Soul Surfer,” Access Hollywood has learned. The movie is based on the life of 19-year-old champion surfer Bethany Hamilton who, for over six years, has defied all odds to compete and win professional championships after losing her arm in a shark attack at age thirteen.
The former “American Idol” has been cast as Sarah Hill, a church youth leader.
The movie also stars AnnaSophia Robb as Bethany Hamilton, Helen Hunt as Bethany’s mother Cheri and Dennis Quaid as Bethany’s father Tom.
In addition, Jack Nicholson’s 19-year-old daughter, Lorraine, has landed the role of Hamilton’s best friend, Alana Blanchard, who was with Hamilton the day of the attack. Kevin Sorbo has been cast as Holt Blanchard.
The trio are in town to promote their new film, “Sleepwalking.”
The story revolves around James Reedy (Nick Stahl), a simple man who leads a less than ordinary existence. When his sister Joleen (Theron) seemingly abandons her daughter Tara (AnnaSophia Robb) with him, Reedy finds himself ill equipped to deal with the care of his 11-year-old niece.
Faced with the prospect of losing Tara to a foster home, James manages to overcome his complacency, stealing away with the girl and taking to the road. In the course of their uneasy journey, their bond slowly begins to grow, as Tara must come to terms with her mother’s disappearance. James, for the first time, is forced to truly examine long buried past events and the consequences they have had on his life, and determine whether they will continue to haunt his future.
“Sleepwalking” is helmed by Bill Maher (not the “Politically Incorrect” guy), who is a visual effects expert and will be making his directorial debut. His new film will premier at Sundance and will then hit theaters on March 14th, in limited release.
