As she should.
Newly crowned Miss Teen USA Karlie Hay got into some major trouble after four tweets using the “N” word were discovered shortly after Hay was crowned Miss Teen USA 2016 in Las Vegas on Saturday. Screenshots of the offensive postings made their way around the Internet, and obvi people were REALLY pissed about it. Since, she has apologized for her controversial use of the N-word on lots of media outlets. But, still.
In an interview with George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America, the 18-year-old Texan says she’s “ashamed” of using the racial slur in a series of tweets from 2013.
“I am very sorry,” she said. “It’s embarrassing. It’s something I’m ashamed of. I’ve grown up from that 15-year-old girl who used that type of language. It’s never acceptable and now I know how hurtful it is. It hurts me to know that at one point in my life I used that language – I said that. It’s not me.”
“At that age, I was being a follower,” she continued. “I was trying to fit in with my friends. The word was thrown around in the music I listened to, with the friends I hung out with, and I had no guidance. So it was kind of a careless mistake.”
Hay said she was “just amazed that at one point in my life I thought it was okay to use that word,” adding that “it’s not an excuse – there is no excuse to say that word at all.”
“There are certain things that Miss Teen USA just can’t do,” Kamie Crawford, 2010 Miss Teen USA , told GMA, adding that “if the decision was in my hands, absolutely she would have to be dethroned – not necessarily because of what she said, but the avenue in which she decided to say it.”
The Miss Universe Organization hasn’t decrowned Karlie, and is committed to supporting Hay’s “continued growth,” whatever that means. I get how she was 15 and a big idiot, but still. I’m sure she was in the pageant world back then and knew stuff (LIKE RACISM) could bite her in the ass.
