Blake Shelton is getting honest…at least according to his new album, which is called If I’m Honest (very on the nose, dude).
The Voice coach has made no secret that his corny duet with girlfriend Gwen Stefani Go Ahead and Break My Heart celebrated their love story… but don’t get it twisted, he goes very Taylor Swift on this album, too.
On Monday, the singer opened up about his new album during the iHeartRadio album release show in LA. While he didn’t specifically name ex-wife Miranda Lambert as the inspiration of the song I Bet You Still Think About Me, Shelton went into the meaning behind the breakup track. He said:
“It’s basically what it sounds like. At some point whether you go through a divorce or a breakup or whatever, once you get past the anger and the frustration of it all, you kind of go into the sad part of it where it’s just like, ‘Gosh, how come that didn’t work out?’ And that’s what this song is about. Even though stuff didn’t work out, I bet you miss me a little bit. It’s a sad song.”
Ugh, egocentric much? Do you miss HER, Blake?
As for Shelton’s duet with Stefani, the 39-year-old said it was special because of “the honest way it came about” — as both had a need to write “about some serious insecurities that we had when we first started down this road with each other.” Such as….
“We both had trust issues. We were getting over it, but we wrote this song about it, and it’s perfect…There’s not a third ghost writer, there’s not five writers on it. It’s just she and I sat down and wrote this song … and I couldn’t be happier about [it].”
Ugh, I’ve never liked Blake Shelton, but I’m totally digging on how much he’s into himself and his relationships. The dude’s new album If I’m Honest in stores May 20, and while I won’t be buying one, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the backlash…
