John Mayer is totally happy with Katy Perry, but it wasn’t long ago that he was labeled a womanizer by many. In a new interview with CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” he’s finally opening up about his past bad behavior.

“I was just a jerk,” Mayer told CBS’ Anthony Mason on the show, speaking about his past behavior. After all, who could forget his 2010 Playboy interview, where he referred to his ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson as “sexual napalm,” dished on his relationship with Jennifer Aniston and made seemingly racist comments about the types of women he prefers?

Attempting to explain his behavior, Mayer said, “I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction.”

But now, he says, he’s changed. “It’s very liberating when you finally realize it’s impossible to make everyone like you,” he said.

Mayer said that dealing with losing his voice for months following vocal cord issues and surgery wasn’t as difficult as dealing with the bad PR he got from all his “open mouth, insert foot” comments.

Here’s the thing. If John Mayer wants to tell the world that I’m ‘sexual napalm,’ I could probably find a way to get over it. He also wrote ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’ about Jennifer Love Hewitt. Also, I’d take it. But from here on out, he’s going to be a good boy. Until he breaks up with Katy Perry, though. We’ll see if he actually is capable of keeping his mouth shut.
