Even though Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ wasn’t seen by many people, it certainly generated a lot of buzz for the Oscar-winning actress. She was nominated for a Golden Globe (Best Foreign Film), and she also won the Stanley Kramer Award at the Producers Guild Award. I did want to see the movie, but honestly I just never cared enough. I realize it was probably a pretty good movie, I just never got around to seeing it.
Well, studios must have a lot of faith in the actress, because she’s just landed a HUGE job, directing the feature-film adaptation of the bestselling book ‘Unbroken’.
Angelina Jolie is ready to spend more time behind theÃÂ camera. The Oscar winner is planning to direct the feature-filmÃÂ adaptation of the Laura Hillenbrand best-seller Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption, a true story about Louis Zamperini, a competitor at the 1936 Olympics who, as a U.S. Army Air Forces bombardier during World War II, survived aÃÂ plane crashÃÂ and then spent the rest of the war in a Japanese prison camp.
Now thatââ¬â¢s a story just made for the big screenââ¬âand Jolie knew it, too.
ââ¬ÅI read Laura Hillenbrandââ¬â¢s brilliant book, and I was so moved by Louie Zamperiniââ¬â¢s heroic story, I immediately began to fight for the opportunity to make thisàfilm,ââ¬Â Jolie said in a statement. ââ¬ÅLouie is a true hero and a man of immense humanity, faith and courage. I am deeply honored to have the chance to tell his inspiring story.ââ¬Â
Added UniversalàPicturesàcochairs Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley: ââ¬ÅIn her life and in her work, Angelina has embraced stories and causes involving great struggle and triumph over tremendous odds and the basic human condition. She has a real ability to illustrate the strength in human spirit which will be essential in telling Louââ¬â¢s story of survival and great heroism.ââ¬Â (E! and UniversalàPicturesàare both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
Jolie, who seemingly spends as much time (if not more) on humanitarian missions in war-torn countries these days as she does acting on movie sets, made her feature directorial debut with the Bosnian war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey.
Hillenbrand, meanwhile, is two for two: Unbroken is only her second novel after Seabiscuit: An American Legend, which also got the Hollywood treatment.
How many of you read that book? I read it a while back, and to this day it still gives me chills. It was an absolutely BRILLIANT story. So shocking you can’t believe it’s true, and even more that the poor man survived all that he survived. With every chapter you are shocked to learn what he went through. I haven’t read a more shocking and inspirational story – ever. If you haven’t read it, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
As far as Angelina directing it, I’m more excited she’s in the seat – than say – Michael Bay. The movie will need to be more gritty, less Hollywood. I think Angelina could pull that off. I hope she does the book justice, that’s all I’ll say about that.
Can’t wait to hear who they cast to play Louie. I’m just gonna throw Michael Fassbender’s name out there…. He would be PERFECT.
Plus the thought of Angelina and Michael working on a piece together is somewhat hot. You know I’m right.
