This video took me completely by surprise. I’ve always liked Sigur Ros, so when I heard that Shia Labeouf was starring in one of their music videos, I thought “cool!” And then I watched the video! It is weird, weird, weird. Almost immediately it shows a completely nude Shia Labeouf, and then it gets EVEN WEIRDER when Shia attempts an interpretive dance. I have to be honest, I do have a hard time enjoying interpretive dance. This could be some beautiful masterpiece, and I’m just not “getting it”, but I doubt that.
Here’s more behind this bizarre video:
The acclaimed Icelandic band Sigur Rós recently asked a dozen filmmakers to each choose a song from its new album, ââ¬ÅValtari,ââ¬Â and shoot a video inspired by the music. All the directors received the same $10,000 budget and zero instructions from the band. With that creative freedom, filmmaker Alma Harââ¬â¢el delivered dead butterflies, light-up lollipops and a naked (in every sense) performance from a star of megabudget Hollywood movies.
Harââ¬â¢elââ¬â¢s video for ââ¬ÅFjögur PÃÂanóââ¬Â features Shia LaBeouf (ââ¬ÅTransformers,ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skullââ¬Â) and actress Denna Thomsen as a couple caught up in a destructive spiral, possibly revolving around drug addiction, lovesick co-dependence or both. The seven-minute video is more of a dream sequence than a narrative. A man and woman go through repetitive motions and get buffeted by two menacing ââ¬Åforces,ââ¬Â bearded guys who feed them glowing candy. LaBeoufââ¬â¢s character, unshaven and with long hair pulled back, trashes a bedroom, weeps and scars his lover. He also dances with her, using jagged, gestural movements.
The video, Harââ¬â¢el suggests, ââ¬Åis about addiction to drugs, or sex, or anythingââ¬âand how you get stuck in a cycle.ââ¬Â And the dead butterflies festooning the bedroom that imprisons the couple? The director says they symbolize ââ¬Åvery beautiful things that die very fast,ââ¬Â the experiences or emotions that couple share ad nauseam. ââ¬ÅFor me, itââ¬â¢s about not knowing how to get out of something without causing pain to somebody else,ââ¬Â Harââ¬â¢el says. ââ¬ÅFor other people it might be about candy and fish. Iââ¬â¢m down with that.ââ¬Â
The nude scenes werenââ¬â¢t pre-planned, she says, and came out of group consensus during the five-day project. Had it been a Hollywood production, the full-frontal exposure of a major star wouldââ¬â¢ve been a more complicated matter, no doubt. ââ¬ÅThatââ¬â¢s the difference between working within a corporate system and something that artistically takes you places you wouldnââ¬â¢t expect,ââ¬Â the director says. ââ¬ÅTo me, itââ¬â¢s erotic, but itââ¬â¢s not selling anything.ââ¬Â
Watch the video if you dare. It’s strange, NSFW and 8 minutes long.
