With eight young children and a TV crew following her family around at all times, Kate always had trouble making friends. But since her split from husband Jon — and since the crew of Jon & Kate Plus 8, which had become like family, departed — the single mom has felt more alone than ever. “At night, when the kids are in bed, that’s a lonely time for her,” Kate’s closest friend Jamie Ayers tells Life & Style in an exclusive interview. “That’s when she calls and we chat. It gets lonely when you’re the only adult.”

During the day, Kate, 34, tries to banish the loneliness by staying busy. “Mostly, she gets up at the crack of dawn, works out and makes breakfast,” says Jamie. “She runs errands while the kids are at school, and she does a lot of baking during the holidays.”

But that isn’t enough to fill the void. Stephanie Santoro, former nanny for the kids who claims she had an affair with Jon (which he denied), believes that deep down, Kate misses her ex. “There have been times she’s said she wished the old Jon would come back,” Stephanie, who’s in touch with the family’s other nannies, tells Life & Style. “She wants that companionship back.”
