So I finished reading “My Sister’s Keeper”

I don’t want to ruin the book for those of you that haven’t read it…so I’ll put the rest behind the cut. Click on more if you wanna talk about it with me. SPOILERS AHEAD! Okay, so first off…holy cow, what an amazing book! I picked it up sometime on Thursday – and finished it last night. I couldn’t stop reading it! I don’t know about you – but I could have read a whole book on Campbell and Julia alone. I was completely in LOVE with their storyline.
The ending had me in TEARS. I was a wreck! I went up to my husband after I had read it – all shaken up – and tried to explain why I was so upset. He just looked at me like I had lost my mind.

So I then dusted off the other book I’ve had waiting for me “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter” and I’m already thinking this is going to be depressing as hell! So I want you guys to suggest another good book for me. You did so well with My Sister’s Keeper!
What amazing book have you read lately?

I am currently reading: Nineteen Minutes. Which is also by Jodi Picoult. It’s also a bit on the dark side but this gal has a gift for writing. I can’t put the book down.
A must read is: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I have recommended this book to people who don’t read books that often and everyone loves it…

i’ve read both kc_christine recommended and they are amazing…19 minutes gives us such a better look into what really goes on in the last moments of the victims of shootings lives. the glass castle was funny and heartwarming…i’d recommend them both also.
but i must say i just finished another by jodi picoult, keeping faith…and it was one of her best by far. don’t be afraid of the plotline, its not as difficult and far fetched as some people may assume. even better when you have kids…so much to relate to.

I suggest Nineteen Minutes, as well. Actually, any of Jodie’s books are a good choice. The Pact is a really good one, too!
There is a book called The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. It starts off a bit slow, but picks up after the first couple of chapters. It’s not the type of book I normally read, but I loved it.

I don’t get it. I thought My Sister’s Keeper was one of the worst books I’ve read in a long time. It was really far fetched and poorly written.

you should read “runaway” if u havent yet. its really sad but inspiring at the same time. i think ima have to pick “the memory keepers daughter” and “my sisters keeper” they both sound like book i would read
August 6th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
I read MEMORY KEEPER’s DAUGHTER–I liked that one..I am now reading KITE RUNNER–for my book club..and, before the movie comes out
August 6th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
by the way “runaway” is by Wendelin Van Draanen. i highly recommend it

@Sue… ugh… if only it WAS far-fetched. There are plenty of parents who do just that… if you are as old as dirt like me, you’ll remember that one family got a lot of publicity for having a child exactly like that; they just didn’t take it to the extreme like that.
Memory Keeper’s Daughter I thought was completely contrived and annoying. Right now I’m reading Bel Canto… I read Ann Patchett’s Truth and Beauty and was devastated by it, so I wanted to go back and read her fiction.

I have read Memory Keeper’s Daughter..I liked it. I just finished reading “Water For Elephants” and LOVED IT!! It was so hard to put down.

Emma and Me by Elizabeth Flock. I started and finished that book all in the same day! I couldn’t put it down. It might not be a cherry tale…but its very emotionally involved. I have read The Memory Keeper’s Daughter twice…and it is also a great book. All of Jodi Picoult’s novels I have read as well (with the exception of Nineteen Minutes). Someone mentioned ‘The Pact’ and ‘Keeping Faith’. Both were page turners for me and I was unable to put them down over a two day span. Another excellent book, that is turning into a movie, is Cecelia Ahern’s ‘P.S. I Love You’. Again probably not a cheer you up book….but a dynamite read nonetheless!

Eat, Pray, Love – a wonderful nonfiction – wonderful!!!

I loved ‘My Sisters Keeper’. Try ‘The Lovely Bones’ by Alice Sebold and ‘The Time Tvavellers Wife’ by Audrey NIffenegger. I loved them both, but the latter is on my top five all time favourites list. Love it!!
August 6th, 2007 at 11:48 pm
haha I read the same two books in the same order…They are great books but they both made me cry!
Personally I enjoyed My Sister’s Keeper better….Can’t wait to hear what you think
TIME TRAVERLER’S WIFE IS THE BEST BOOK. Everyone I know could not put it down..

I read the Kite Runner too and loved it. I didn’t know it was going to be a movie.

Youth In Revolt by C.D. Payne. Nothing depressing at all. Completely hilarious. It would be a nice change of pace.
August 7th, 2007 at 1:35 am
“Until I Find You” by John Irving. It’s not a traditional read. It’s in the tradition of nobody except John Irving. I was fully into it and never wanted it to end. Jack Burns was a tortured soul. But, it has some surreal comic moments and beautiful imagery. It’s a little boy’s (to man’s) quest for truth vs. the lies that can perpetuate from a mother who thinks she is doing the right thing. I finished it 6 months ago and still think of it…

“God-Shaped Hole” by Tiffanie DeBartolo was a great book!
August 7th, 2007 at 2:56 am
The Time Traveller’s Wife… I read it in one sitting which is crazy because it’s like a gazillion pages long. And it’s being made into a movie! Hurrah!

Anything by Jodi Picoult is wonderful. Also John Irving for quirky fun. Also, an oldie but goody, is Flowers for Algernon.

Nineteen Minutes was a really good book by Picoult but there is another one by her, the setting is in an Amish community and a teenage girl gives birth in the barn and then is accused of killing the baby- it is really good I just can’t think of the name right now…Does anyone know what it’s called? Also, I thought the Memory Keeper’s Daughter was made to seem like it was a lot better than it was- i didn’t see what the big deal was, I was bored.

Jodi Picoult is a great writer. The Amish one (Plain Truth) wasn’t excellent, but still a good read. The ending of My Sister’s keeper was so unexpected. Great book.
If you want a totally absorbing read, I seriously recommend The Bronze Horeman by Paulina Simons, it’s a series of three books about a Russian girl in WWII and it’s just amazing, great story, great characters, I can’t recommend it enough. She also wrote Girl in Times Square which is another great read, she really researches well and it all feels like a true storey.

I am so excited to read the suggested books. I am a fast reader and average 3 books a week- which makes it difficult to find good books. It’s great to see so many recommendations…
August 7th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
I’m so excited for these suggestions too! I wrote them all down
Also, another one that wasn’t meantioned is by the same author of The Kite Runner. I believe it’s newer. It’s called A Thousand Splendid Suns. It’s about a woman in Afghanistan but it’s a much quicker read. I lovvved it.

The Pact by Jodi Picoult….words cant even describe.
August 7th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
I haven’t read any of the above books. They’re actually not even on my list of books to read, so these recommendations may fall upon deaf ears, however, I’ll make them anyway, as I’m fairly passionate about them. I’m currently nearing the end of Thomas Wolfe’s You Can’t Go Home Again. It’s really well written, pre-beat non-fiction. Also, Shipping News by Annie Proulx is one of my favorite books of all time. Desolation Angels by Kerouac, Indecision by Benjamin Kunkel and Off The Road by Carolyn Cassady…plus just about anything by Cormack McCarthy.

“Water for Elephants” was GREAT – can’t stop thinking about it. Also, “Middlesex” was really good. I can’t get into girly, outlandish love or “sister” type tales, they are silly to me. Both the “Glass House” and “The Road” were awesome. The Road was a little disturbing, but it was very good.
August 7th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
“water for elephants” was amazing – I started in on the beach on saturday and couldnt put it down. “the glass castle” was also really great – a quick read and a great story, something lighter until you read “the memory keepers daughter”, but you MUST read it – I thought it was going to be a whole lot sadder than it was. Another one that I read a while ago was “wedding in december” – well written and captivating. I saw someone mention “the pact” – I love jodi picoult, but I HATED that book, I would however suggest “keeping faith” and “salem falls” both amazing.
