On August 30, the Los Angeles Times reported that luxe knitwear line St. John, which paid Angelina Jolie, 31, a reported $12 million to star in its ads, “killed the cash cow†by alienating its core customers.
The problem? Older women (fans include Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice) rejected the attempt to update its ladylike (read: conservative) look. While St. John has no plans to replace Jolie, saying, “We are proud to have her,†loyalists remain miffed. As one told the Times, “Angelina is tacky. St. John is elegant.â€
