What is Alkaline Water?

This type of water and the name “alkaline” refers to the pH levels inside. As you may already know, pH is the number that measures the acidity of substance on a scale of 0 to 14. For example, a substance with pH of 1 is very acidic, while 13 is very alkaline.

The higher the number, the healthier the water. Regular drinking water does not have as high pH as alkaline varieties, meaning alkaline is better for the body as it neutralizes different acids present in our systems.

For reference, normal drinking water that is not advertised as any special variety has a neutral pH of 7, halfway between acidic and true alkaline. On the other hand, alkaline waters have 8 or 9, or some value in-between.

Other than the high values of pH, real alkaline waters also have to contain additional minerals and negative oxidation reduction potential, or ORP for short. This gives the water the property of an antioxidant or a pro-oxidant. The more negative this ORP value is, the more autoxidizing the water is and therefore more beneficial for us.

Not only can you drink it, you should consume between eight and twelve glasses of alkaline water to get the optimal benefits from it. This comes down to two to three liters per day, or one and a half to two bottles depending on the brand. If you have an alkaline water filter or pitcher, you can drink even more.

However, if you have never consumed this type of water before, make sure the transition is natural and slow.

Start with three to four glasses and slowly drink less of the regular water while increasing the amount of alkaline water. You should aim to change the pH levels in your body over a certain period of time and not immediately and suddenly.
