According to Amy Winehouse’s family, the singer had no illegal drugs in her system when she died, and it is still unclear what killed the singer.

The Winehouse family said in a statement that they’ve seen the toxicology reports, and admit “alcohol was present”, but it has yet to be determined if that’s what contributed to her death.

The 27-year-old soul diva, who had battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, was found dead in her London home on July 23, and an initial post-mortem failed to determine the cause of death.

A statement released by spokesman Chris Goodman on the family’s behalf said “toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy’s system at the time of her death.”

It said the family awaited the outcome of an inquest that is due to begin in October.

Winehouse’s father, Mitch, has said his daughter had beaten her drug dependency three years before her death, but he admitted she was still struggling to control her drinking after several weeks of abstinence.

Mitch Winehouse told mourners at the singer’s July 26 funeral that she had said to him, “`Dad I’ve had enough of drinking, I can’t stand the look on your and the family’s faces anymore.’”

The Winehouse family announced plans to establish a charitable foundation in the singer’s name to help people struggling with addiction – although Mitch Winehouse has said the plans are on hold because someone else had registered the name Amy Winehouse Foundation.

According to reports, Amy Winehouse was about to begin the process of adopting 10 year old Dannika Augustine from St. Lucia.

Dannika had been living in poverty with her single mom and agreed to let Amy adopt her. The two had become very close over the last two years.

“Amy was already my mother,” Dannika said. “I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me and we had fun together. I loved her and she loved me. She was the most amazing person and I was looking forward to living with her here or in London. I cannot believe she is gone.”

Dannika’s grandmother, Marjorie Lambert, told the tabloid she had hired a lawyer to begin the adoption process. “Amy used to beg me, ‘I want to adopt Dannika. I want to take her to England,’ she recalled. “She was prepared to move to St Lucia to be her full-time mum. Amy wanted to have a child so bad.

“If she had not died, there is no doubt she would be here in St Lucia completing the adoption process,” she continued. “There is no way she would have done what she did to herself if Dannika was with her.”

Earlier today in London, workers were spotted moving all of recently passed singer Amy Winehouse‘s things out of her apartment, just six days after she was found dead. The workers carried large, black garbage bags both in and out of the singer’s home, which is still surrounded by floral arrangements and memorials.

On Thursday night, Winehouse’s parents joined other family members and friends of the singer – including Kelly Osbourne – at Amy’s favorite bar in London to celebrate her life.

Winehouse’s autopsy was conducted this past Monday afternoon, and toxicology results will be available in 2-to-4 weeks. Police called her death “unexplained,” adding speculation about a drug overdose is “inappropriate” in light of the fact that no drugs were found at her house upon inspection.

Amy Winehouse’s family is insisting the singer did not die from a drug overdose. In fact now they are claiming that her death on Saturday at the age of 27, was due to her sudden abstinence from alcohol.

Winehouse ignored doctors’ advice to step back gradually from her heavy drinking and went cold turkey in the past month, an unnamed family friend tells Britain’s Sun. Her family believes that was too much of a shock to her system, the source adds.

“Abstinence gave her body such a fright, they thought it was eventually the cause of her death,” says the source.

PEOPLE has confirmed that this is the family’s belief.

The cause of Winehouse’s death won’t be known for weeks, pending the completion of toxicology tests.

There have been reports that Winehouse went on a bender during her final days. But the family source tells the Sun that her father, Mitch Winehouse, said in his eulogy at his daughter’s funeral that he believed it was just the opposite.

“He said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn’t do that. It was all or nothing and she gave up completely,” says the source.

“Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take.”

This whole story is so sad, but if she really did die from finally trying to do the right thing – then it’s even sadder!
