Sigourney Weaver had to be forced to take her career as an actress seriously by pals - because she was so self-conscious growing up.

The 58-year-old star admits she was reluctant to pursue a career in entertainment from an early age, until she was convinced by friends of her talent and finally decided to get over her shyness.

She says, “I was very shy, very self-conscious. I didn’t even decide to be an actress until my friends kept hiring me in New York. I kind of backed into it.”

Weaver adds she’s worked with many co-stars who suffered from similar insecurities: “It’s funny how many late-bloomers there are in our business. Whether through shyness or what have you, we hold back and then suddenly - boom!”

Uma Thurman welcomed famous pals Elton John, Sting, Claudia Schiffer, and Bob Geldof to a lavish garden party on Tuesday to celebrate her engagement to boyfriend Arpad Busson.

Other celebrity guests at the bash included British actress/model Elizabeth Hurley and husband Arun Nayer, fashion designer Stella McCartney, artist Damien Hirst and director Matthew Vaughn.

Guests were invited to Swiss businessman Busson’s Kensington, London home, where the party was held in a marquee.

The couple announced its engagement last week.

The aspiring actress featured in Verne Troyer’s shocking new sex video has revealed she ended her six-month romance with the pint-sized actor because he cheated on her.

Ranae Shrider was seen kissing the Austin Powers star as he focused the camera for their taped sex romp in brief footage aired on website TMZ.com.

And as the actor seeks legal recourse against the website for showing the footage without his permission, Shrider has gone public with her heartbreak following the split.

She tells America’s In Touch magazine, “He cheated on me a bunch of times. I never once cheated on him. I took our relationship seriously. This was the first guy I have ever lived with.”

Shrider, who fell for 39-year-old Troyer during a New Year’s Eve party at the Playboy Mansion in California, admits her ex-boyfriend’s pals disliked her from the start because she wanted to halt his partying ways.

She adds, “I was never really accepted by his friends because I would always keep an eye on his drinking.”

Jake Gyllenhaal will join his sister Maggie at one of The Dark Knight premieres in a bid to pay tribute to his Brokeback Mountain co-star and friend Heath Ledger.

Jake Gyllenhaal, the godfather of Ledger’s two-year-old daughter with Michelle Williams, is planning to attend one of the upcoming U.S. premieres.

He’ll support his sister Maggie, who worked with tragic Ledger on the new Batman film.

A source tells OK! magazine, “Jake is debating coming to the New York city premiere or waiting to be Maggie’s date at an L.A. screening. He wants this to be something positive that will celebrate the role of a lifetime and a performance of which Heath was so proud.”

Ledger’s parents and sister are also expected to jet to New York from their home in Perth, Australia, to attend the New York premiere on July 14th.

Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment in January.

Britney Spears’ acclaimed stint on U.S. sitcom How I Met Your Mother hasn’t earned her an Emmy nod - she and Mary-Kate Olsen’s guest TV spots won’t be among those competing for gold.

Both stars have been left off the top 10 list of Emmy semifinalists in the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category.

Instead, Sarah Silverman is a favorite for her part as an obsessed stalker in Monk, alongside Oscar nominee Amy Ryan for her star turn in The Office.

Others on the list include Carrie Fisher and Edie Falco for 30 Rock, and Polly Bergen and Shirley Knight for Desperate Housewives guest spots.

The awards will be handed out on September 6th.
