Start A Money Making Blog – Day 1
Welcome to our free 7 Day Blogging Basics Course. During this process, you will learn to start a money making blog. My name is Roberta and I run ICYDK.com with my boyfriend Scottie. Blogging has done a lot for me over the years – such as allowing me to quit my regular day job at a bank, paying off my car, and keeping the bills paid. Over the years, blogging has been so much more than that for me.
As a divorced mother of two sons, it has allowed me the opportunity to be there for my children when my ‘regular’ job would not. It has also given me the freedom to come and go as I saw fit. While friends and family members were stuck at their day-to-day jobs, I was able to handle my laundry, go grocery shopping, and basically anything I wanted during the day. I wrote my own schedule and loved every minute of it.
I actually began blogging in 2001 for a short time, but didn’t pick it back up until 2006. In 2006, I started a music website called Earsucker.com. At the time, I was praising music I loved and annihilating music I hated. It wasn’t a job back then – it was a fun hobby that I enjoyed. I learned a lot about blogging, WordPress design, and image editing through a lot of trial and error.
After a couple of years, I changed the focus of my website to be more about entertainment news. In 2008, I realized that I was making more from my website than my day job. It didn’t feel real at the time that I was getting all of these offers to buy out my website and the money I was making was ridiculous! I worked my butt off until one day in August of the same year, I decided that enough was enough – and quit my job at the bank. I thought about how ridiculous the money was already and how much more insane it could get if I dedicated all of my time to professional blogging.
In November 2008, I interviewed Lady Gaga on the phone. I was shaking like a leaf when I talked to her, but she was so sweet and nice. I explained that I didn’t have a recording device and was typing out her responses as she said them. She was super nice!
In 2010, we were invited to cover the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Since then, professional blogging has been such a wild ride for me. Now, I have decided to share all of the insights that I’ve learned since 2006 until now so that you can enjoy the same freedom as I have.
As a professional blogger, writer, and designer, I still learn as much as I possibly can and network with people so that I can grow in this blogging world that I’ve helped to create.
Our goal in this 7 Day Blogging Basics Course is to provide you with the tools, skills, and knowledge that I wish I had when I first started out. Lesson 1: Brainstorming, Name Selection, Niche Ideas, and Domain Name Availability
Like many of you, when I started my first blog I was at a loss for exactly what to blog about. I tossed some ideas around, but was unclear about the direction that I wanted my blog to take. Of the people I’ve spoken with, about 90 percent of them said that the only reason they hadn’t started a blog yet was because they weren’t sure of their particular niche.
What you have to think about first is what you’re passionate about. Do you have any hobbies of which you would enjoy writing? Are you an expert in your field? Is there a subject (or subjects) of which you could ramble on about for days on end?
Think about those questions for our assignment tonight. Is there some knowledge that you can impart upon the world? Are you a mother looking to share your stories with other mothers? No matter the case, you will find that there are people in the world who are like-minded. If you’re talking about cats, cats that wear hats, or black cats that wear red hats, there is a really good chance that out of the many people roaming the Earth, there are a lot of people who understand where you’re coming from.
Having said that, beware of choosing a niche that is too broad or narrowly focused. In the course of blogging, you will find your footing and select exactly what is right for you and your blog. When risking blogging too broadly or narrowly, you have to think about what kind of audience you’re going to have. My best advice is to try to keep your niche focused to under six different categories and no less than two. I think that is the perfect spot to keep readers entertained and coming back. That’s the point, isn’t it? We all want to get and retain readers because that’s where the money is at. Advertisers want to see that you have an audience so that they can pay you to market their products.
Think about the questions above and keep track of the subjects of which you would be considered knowledgeable or an expert. Are you on a special journey in life of which you would like to share with the world? In the past, I’ve found that the more personal you make your story the more relate-able it is to other people. When you start a money making blog, you have to have passion about your topic or niche because writing without passion is always a dead giveaway.
Think about your ideas and keep track of them on paper. Ask your friends, co-workers, family members, and anyone of whom you are close to give their opinion on the topics you’ve chosen. When you have narrowed it down, you are on your way to starting a blog!
If you’ve thought about writing about your life and experiences, then you are not alone. Many bloggers out there write about their lives and that is perfectly fine. You can choose to talk about your significant other, family members, children, pets, and anything related to your household. Many people write lifestyle blogs and there is a great demand for that type of content. Brands actually love lifestyle bloggers!
Some niches that are considered to be profitable are: Lifestyle, pets, health and fitness, personal finance, travel, and beauty – to name a few. So, if you’re knowledgeable or an expert in any of these fields then you might just make a killing with your new blog.
First and foremost, you have to select a niche of which you are passionate. That is the blogging equivalent of having a telemarketing job. You do it for the money, but you’re going to hate every second of it.
Don’t worry if you haven’t gotten any ideas just yet. This is an important step and one that you just can’t breeze by. Don’t let the lack of inspiration nag at you so hard that you end up not starting a blog either. Just remember, just because you start a blog today doesn’t mean that the niche(s) you’ve selected are set in stone.
You want to get started sooner rather than later, though. As a matter of fact, getting started now prevents you from forgoing the idea of starting your own self-hosted WordPress blog entirely.
