Comedienne Wanda Sykes recently revealed that she went through a double mastectomy after finding out that she had breast cancer, and now the 47-year-old opened up once again with PEOPLE about her decision, saying that it didn’t take long for to  make the decision to rid her body of her breasts.

“I just wanted the best odds. I made my decision because I love life.”

Sykes was diagnosed with DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ], a noninvasive type of breast cancer, after having a breast reduction in February.

“My first thought was, ‘Really? Me, breast cancer?’ I just couldn’t believe it, but I knew this was doable.”

On Her Surgery
“I was miserable. Every day I had to change the bandages and look at it, and it was not pretty at all,” says Sykes. “I just wanted my life back.”

On Sharing Her Experience With Her Kids
“We never hid anything from the kids. They were a huge part of my decision because I wanted to be around for them. I feel whole again, I really do. I’ve told them, ‘Mommy’s boo-boo is much better now.’ “

Wanda Sykes (left) just revealed in an appearance on “Ellen” that she has breast cancer. The comedian told Ellen Degeneres that she went in for a breast reduction surgery in February, and the doctors detected the cancer at that point.

An audience member told Gossip Cop that Sykes said she had a double mastectomy in August, and was back on the road with her stand-up routine only a month later!

Hopefully she’s fully in remission now!

Wanda Sykes has confessed to buying a bootleg DVD of the Michael Jackson concert documentary “This Is It” – because she’s too busy as a new mother of twins to go to the movie theater.

The star and her wife Alex welcomed babies Olivia Lou and Lucas Claude in April but she admits the tots are becoming quite a handful.

Sykes insists her parenting duties leave her with little spare time, so she resorted to purchasing a pirate copy of “This Is It” because she was so desperate to see the film.

But the funnywoman admits the disc quality was so bad, it wasn’t worth it.

She says, “There’s so many movies i wanna see, like there’s the Michael Jackson movie I wanna see. I don’t have time so I did something I never do, I bought a bootleg. I know, I know, but it’s something I never do. They’re the worst, mine was really bad!”

Comic Wanda Sykes has come out.

She says the passage of Proposition 8 – a same-sex marriage ban in California – has led to her be more outspoken about her sexual orientation.

“You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life,” she said at a gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, The Associated Press reports.

“Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay. But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives,” she said.

The New Adventures of Old Christine actress, who married her wife on Oct. 25, said Prop 8 made her feel like she was “attacked.”

“Now, I gotta get in their face,” Sykes said. “I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”
