Mad Men’s Vincent Kartheiser: I Won’t Have Kids For Environmental Reasons

Vincent Kartheiser, who plays Pete Campbell on ‘Mad Men’ and does not own a toilet, appeared on MSNBC Wednesday afternoon to talk about his “green choices,” which include avoiding driving, eating meat and having kids.

He said he stopped driving four years ago, when his car flooded and he found that taking the train instead “actually enriched my life. It made my life better to slow down a little bit and walk through the city.”

Vincent talked about other choices he has made to minimize his impact.

“I’ve been a vegetarian for four years and I have chosen not to have children, which are both green choices in my life,” he said. “I also xeriscaped my lawn.”

Earlier this year, Vincent told UK’s Observer that he does not own a toilet.

“I don’t have a toilet at the moment,” he said. “My house is just a wooden box. I mean I am planning to get a toilet at some point. But for now I have to go to the neighbours. I threw it all out.”

‘Mad Men’s’ Vincent Kartheiser has lost his ever lovin mind!

He plays uptight Park Avenue resident Pete Campbell on ‘Mad Men,’ but actor Vincent Kartheiser is decidedly less materialistic than his alter ego.

In an interview with the UK Observer, Kartheiser, who resides in LA, says he no longer has a car (he takes the bus or walks) and lives in a home with no toilet.

He claims to use his neighbor’s.

I don’t have a toilet at the moment. My house is just a wooden box. I mean I am planning to get a toilet at some point. But for now I have to go to the neighbours. I threw it all out.”

(As he says this, I’m wondering whether this is just another of the parts Kartheiser might be trying on for size, but to prove the point he later takes me back to his house, which really is an empty wooden box, a small one-room bungalow on a nondescript Hollywood street and indeed it has no lavatory.) Is that a Buddhist thing, I wonder, or an early midlife crisis thing?

“It started a couple of years ago,” he says. “It was in response to going to these Golden Globe type events and they just give you stuff. You don’t want it. You don’t use it. And then Mad Men started to become a success on a popular level and people started sending me stuff, just boxes of shit. Gifts for every holiday, clothes. One day, I looked around and thought ‘I don’t want this stuff, I didn’t ask for it’. So I started giving it to friends or charity stores, or if it is still in its box I might sell it for a hundred bucks. I liked it so I didn’t stop.”

Mad Men Costar Cried at Christina Hendricks, Elisabeth Moss Weddings

Mad Men star Vincent Kartheiser is man enough to cry at weddings — as he did at two recent ceremonies for castmates Christina Hendricks and Elisabeth Moss.

Moss, 27, married Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen, 42, at The Foundry in Long Island City, New York Oct. 26.

“They got right down to the ceremony,” attendee Kartheiser told Usmagazine.com at at Monday’s Casting Society of the America’s New York 25th Annual Artios Awards. “Not a lot of hoopla and waiting around. Really simple and beautiful. Elisabeth said stuff that made me cry.” The actor kept the couple’s words to himself, but explained, “They were really just speaking to each other and the people they loved.”

Hendricks’ Oct. 12 wedding with Geoffrey Arend at Manhattan restaurant Il Buco, meanwhile, “was much smaller,” he says.

“Everyone seemed to know each other. I also cried in that wedding!”

The actor explains that he’s been close to the pair for a while. “I’ve been around for a lot of their relationship. Geoffrey was a really good friend of mine, and when he met Christina I saw his whole life change for the better. It’s an inspiring thing when two people can adapt, give to each other and help each other grow.”

For all his waterworks, Kartheiser, who attended Monday’s event with his girlfriend of one year, Shanna Collins, says he’s “not the marriage type.”

“I don’t get what it’s for,” he says. “What’s the big deal? For some people it works — I don’t know what it would do for me, I’m so confused!”
