Boy George is set to play an exclusive gig for an unlikely audience - he will perform at New York’s Department of Sanitation Family Day in August.
The former Culture Club frontman worked alongside the Big Apple’s sanitation workers in 2006 when he was sentenced to community service and garbage duty after falsely reporting a burglary at his apartment in the city.
And the star is keen to perform for the people he met while being punished - insisting their kindness made the humiliating task easier.
He explains, “The people I worked alongside showed great kindness to me at a very difficult time, and I wanted to thank them all in a way that would show my appreciation.”
The star will play at the department’s annual Family Day on August 17th. He is kicking of a North American tour in Aspen, Colorado a month before.
A spokesman for the Department of Sanitation says, “Keeping New York City safe and clean is a daunting challenge - as Boy George well knows - and we welcome his generous offer to entertain those who have made our city the cleanest it has been in more than 30 years.”

He’s married to Gwen Stefani and has a solo album out – and baby No. 2 on the way – but none of that is going to Gavin Rossdale’s head.
“You have to relinquish all self-importance,” the British rocker, 42, tells People of life as a dad. “It’s not a bad thing. You don’t have time to think about yourself. I used to wallow in introspection. I don’t have time to be that guy now.”
And it’s not likely he will have extra time soon. The father to Kingston, who recently turned 2, is kicking off a solo career with this month’s release of Wanderlust, and Rossdale’s wife of six years, Stefani, 38, is expecting the couple’s second child this summer.
Before becoming a dad, “I’d been around babies 12 minutes my entire life. I didn’t read any books. And we had friends of ours who were like, ‘You guys re crazy, you’ve got to read books.’”
But, says Rossdale, “It’s so natural you just fall into it and you find your way. It’s terrifying and exciting and brilliant.”

Dylan McDermott will represent himself in his upcoming divorce hearing.
McDermott, 46, filed for divorce from his wife of 11 years, Shiva Rose, earlier this month.
And, according to the New York Post, the actor - who spent seven years playing a litigator on hit TV show The Practice - will be handling the case in propria persona, acting as his own attorney.
The star has cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, following his announcement of the pair’s separation in September last year.
McDermott and Rose have two daughters: 12-year-old Collette Blu and two-year-old Charlotte Rose. The actor is reportedly seeking joint custody.
