EW Names “The Good Wife” as #1 Best TV Show

From political intrigue to sexual shenanigans, The Good Wife has it all – and tops Entertainment Weekly’s list for Spring TV’s 10 Best Shows. The Good Wife has proved itself unique in that it gives viewers the best of both worlds- acting as a case-of-the-week procedural drama and also stirring up engrossing serialized drama courtesy of the tabloid-worthy personal lives of Julianna Margulies and Chris Noth’s contentious lead couple. While Margulies says she was originally worried that doing a procedural drama might get boring, she was wrong. “One of the reasons Murder, She Wrote was on for so long was that America loves an ending after each show. Where you can solve it and it’s done,” she says.

The central question throughout the rest of the season becomes: Will Alicia ultimately take a page out of the Book of Sanford (as in Jenny) and divorce Peter, or the Book of Spitzer (as in Silda) and stand by her man? “The very strength of the show is that it leaves people wondering and it’s open to interpretation,” says Christine Baranski. “Is she gonna leave him? Do we really want to answer that question yet?” Adds Noth: “I don’t know if they’ll be able to recover or not- that’s part of the ongoing drama…I am fascinated by the behind the blind ambition of politicians and how they balance that with their family.”

Alicia’s growing flirtation with Will (Josh Charles) is destined to slow down- or maybe speed up – the reconciliation with her husband. “All of a sudden, everything is shifting, and it’s opening up her vulnerability to allow feelings to come up,” says Margulies. “This Will Gardner person, they have history. It’s comfortable yet very exciting.”

That’s not the only workplace drama on tap. Because of the upheaval at Stern, Lockhart & Gardner, the job competition between Alicia and Cary blows wide open when Diane and Will decide to bring on a third partner to increase cash flow with additional clients. The ouster of the show’s namesake character may seem nearly impossible, but the spoiler-loathing Margulies insists nothing is certain. “Technically, the show could go on and I could just be the good wife and not the good lawyer anymore,” says the star, who’s already taken home both a Golden Globe and a SAG award for her role in the drama. “I could, technically! You never know. But I don’t think that’s going to happen. I have a feeling they’re going to work it out.”

UPDATE: ‘Growing Pains’ Star Emptied Out Apartment

Missing “Growing Pains” star Andrew Koenig emptied out his apartment in Venice, CA because he wanted to start over in Vancouver … this according to a long-time friend.

Lance Miccio tells TMZ he went to Koenig’s apartment last night, and found it cleaned out.

Miccio says Koenig told him two weeks ago he planned to move back to Vancouver to “start over,” because he considered Vancouver his “place for solace.”

Koenig — son of “Star Trek” star Walter Koenig — was last seen February 14 in Vancouver. Cops told us there have been reported sightings of Koenig since he went missing, and that they are still looking “for a living person.”

“Growing Pains” star goes missing!

Kirk Cameron, who played Mike Seaver on Growing Pains, is hoping and praying for the safety of his missing co-star Andrew Koenig. (Above is the only picture I could find of him on the show.)

“I am very concerned to hear of the disappearance of my old friend Andrew Koenig,” Kirk tells Life & Style. “I can remember many of the fun times we had on the set of Growing Pains. I am praying for his family during this time of distress and for his safe return.”

Kirk shared with Life & Style his plea for the missing actor, who played Mike’s best friend Boner Stabone: “Andrew, if you’re reading this, please call me. Mike and Boner could always work things out when they put their minds to it. I’m praying for you, pal. Hope to hear from you soon.”

Andrew has been missing since Feb. 14 and was last spotted in a bakery in Vancouver, British Columbia. There has been no news on his whereabouts since.

‘Friday Night Lights’ sets end date

Friday-Night-Lights

From Ausiello’s Files:

The fifth season of Friday Night Lights will be its last, multiple sources confirm.

Although an NBC rep insists no official decision on FNL’s future has been made, I’m told the network has informed the show’s cast that they’re free to pursue other work after production on season 5 wraps in June. And while the news is sure to make you — and, more importantly, me — sad, this cloud is chockablock with silver linings. To wit:

* We won’t realize the show is gone for ages. While season 4 wraps tonight on DirecTV, it won’t even debut on NBC until April 30. And the fifth season? That may not hit the network until 2011. (It’ll premiere on DirecTV in the fall.)

* While there was always the possibility that the critical darling could continue for a sixth season, no one connected to the show really expected it to. In other words, though we may sniffle and sob, the cast and crew have already gotten that out of their system by now.

* For the show’s MVPs, the timing is great: Pilot season is just kicking off, so the actors are free to attach themselves to new fall shows with no availability issues. As I mentioned, production on season 5 is expected to wrap in June or July, right around the time most broadcast shows start up production. (My God, can you imagine the bidding wars that’ll ensue over the services of Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton?)

* The timing of the announcement is also great for behind-the-scenes quarterback Jason Katims and his fellow producers. Now they can call their final plays knowing that they’ll be their final plays.

ABC Cancels ‘Ugly Betty’!

FP_IMAGE_278643/FP_SET_278528

This is about as ugly as it gets, folks.

ABC has just informed Ugly Betty producers that the show’s current fourth season will be its last. What’s more, the network has trimmed the show’s episode order from 22 to 20.

Although not a complete shock given the show’s heinous ratings, the news is nonetheless a total bummer — particularly in light of Betty’s creative resurgence this season.

The good news is that ABC has given Betty’s bosses enough time to craft a satisfying series finale. Exec producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson confirmed as much in this joint statement: “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

But back to the bad news: Betty is about to hang up her poncho for good. The comments sections is currently accepting heartfelt eulogies…

Fox is jumping on the werewolf bandwagon.

jacobwolf

Nevermind vampires, Fox is looking to get back into the werewolf business.

Net is developing the project “Howl,” from DreamWorks TV.

Project is being written by Joshua Miller and M.A. Fortin. DreamWorks TV toppers Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank would exec produce.

“Howl” is described as an epic family saga about warring families of werewolves in a small Alaskan town.

“Alaska is a place where people disappear and now you know why,” Miller said.
The script reflects the changes that are going on in the country, and “metamorphosis and constant change is the basis of werewolf mythology,” he added. “Howl” is about “the psychology of living with change.”

One of the Fox network’s first-ever series, 1987′s “Werewolf,” also revolved around the mythic creatures. More recently, CBS aired the short-lived “Wolf Lake,” while MTV is currently developing a new take on the 1980s movie “Teen Wolf.”

“Saved by the Bell” reunion not happening!

Saved-by-the-Bell-Cast

It looks like everyone’s favorite 1990s show will not be reuniting anytime soon! “I think it’s dead,” Mark-Paul Gosselaar told Life & Style about the much-hyped reunion for the cast of Saved by the Bell. Life & Style caught up with the actor, who played Zack Morris on the show, at the opening party for the new American Eagle Outfitters store in NYC’s Times Square.

“No one has come up with a good plan,” Mark-Paul added. “People have been saying, “Oh, I want a reunion.” Well, of what? Do they want to see us get together and talk to each other? Or do they want to see a full episode? No one is opposed to it, but there’s just nothing.”

Mark-Paul made an appearance as Zack Morris earlier this year on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Fallon was also one of the biggest proponents of the SBTB reunion. So what was Mark-Paul’s reasoning behind going in character? “I did what I did on Fallon for fun,” Mark-Paul says. “It was my idea.”
