The Spice Girls won’t do Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday party

Spice Girls

The Spice Girls are unlikely to appear at a charity concert in honour of Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday, according to band member Melanie Brown.

The Girl Power group had been thought likely to appear at the Hyde Park gig along with acts such as Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis due to having met the former South African leader at the height of the fame during the 90s.

But speaking to BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat program, Brown said the five-piece’s lengthy world tour probably represented the last occasion they would perform together.

“I did hear about that and we’re all big fans of Nelson Mandela but I don’t think we’re going to be doing that,” she said.

“I know we all have a lot of stuff going on. I know that I’m here working probably until the end of the year. But I know I don’t have a break.”

She added: “But he’s a great guy. I can’t believe he’s 90.”

The Wannabe stars earned millions from their recent series of concerts which saw them stage a residency at London’s O2 Arena as well as performing in North America, Spain and Germany, though originally-planned shows in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Cape Town and Buenos Aires were cancelled due to “personal and family commitments”.

“The tour wasn’t an abrupt end at all because we only started off to do ten shows and it just escalated,” Brown explained.

“There were more and more demands from here, there and everywhere. Our tour went on pretty long considering what we actually started out for it do be. But it was brilliant. We all had so much fun. It was great.”

Petitions for a commemorative DVD of the shows have sprung up on social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo since the end of the tour.

Melanie Chisholm is trying to have a baby

Melanie Chisholm

Melanie Chisholm has been inspired to try for a baby after spending so much time with her bandmates and their children.

The singer - who is the only Spice Girl to remain childless - is now keen to start a family with her long-term love Tom Starr because hanging out with her colleagues’ offspring on the band’s recent reunion tour has made her broody.

She says, “Being backstage at the shows with the girls and all the kids made me think, ‘Yeah I could be a good mum.’ “I used to say giving them (the children) back was the best bit, but seriously all the girls are great mums… and they have given me the confidence to have a go.” B

andmate Victoria Beckham is mother to Brooklyn, seven, Romeo, five, and Cruz, three; Melanie Brown has two daughters, Phoenix Chi, nine, and Angel Irish, one; Geri Halliwell gave birth to Bluebell Madonna in 2006; and Emma Bunton is mum to baby Beau, seven months.

Kelly Osbourne blasts Spice Girls’ parenting

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne has lashed out at the Spice Girls for showing off their children onstage.

The outspoken star has offered her own parenting tips for the girls, and has said that she admires Gwyneth Paltrow’s parenting techniques, but the Spice Girls are at the bottom of her list.

She says that she respect’s Gwyneth’s parenting because she always covers her babies’ faces and never lets the paparazzi get the picture. She said that she’s not going to put the Spice Girls down, but said, “They took their kids on stage at every single show of that last tour of theirs. To be a child of three and have 25,000 girls screaming at you, I don’t think that’s necessarily good.”

You know, it’s always the ones that don’t have children that have something to say. I mean, I agree with her to a certain extent, but didn’t the kids wear earplugs at the concerts?

Victoria Beckham quit the Spice Girls to become a full-time fashion designer

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has decided to become a full-time fashion designer and says that she will never sing with the Spice Girls again. Victoria admitted that she had only agreed to a Spice Girls reunion so that her sons, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz could see her sing on stage.

She says, “I was very nervous about going back into the Spice Girls because I didn’t want to send out a confused message. The reason I decided to do the tour was to show my kids that mummy was a pop star once. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. I’m not in the music industry any more. I’m in the fashion industry.”

She added that she is putting together a team of people now so it will be her main project when she finishes her tour at the end of this month.

Of the Spice Girls tour, she said, “It’s the last opportunity there will be to see the Spice Girls together.”

The Spice Girls scale back their reunion tour

The Spice Girls

The Spice Girls have announced Friday that they would be canceling shows in four countries, China, South Africa, Australia, and Argentina.

Citing “family and personal” reasons, the Spice Girls, said on their official website, “Sadly the tour needs to come to an end by the end of February due to family and personal commitments.”

It wasn’t explained exactly what those commitments might be, but with four of the five Girls being mothers to young children — and with rumors still floating of Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham possibly having another child — it’s likely that these moms just want to spend more time with their families.
