Shania Twain gave everyone something to talk about last December, when she stepped out with Frédéric Thiébaud, the ex-husband of her friend Marie-Anne — who’d had an affair with Shania’s husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange. And now, eight months later, she’s about to get tongues wagging again — because she and Frédéric are getting married!

The couple showed off matching promise rings — hers silver with diamonds, his just silver — at Shania’s secluded cottage on Lake of Bays in the Muskoka region of Ontario.

And they can’t wait to make it official. The insider reveals that Shania and Frédéric have been discussing wedding plans all summer and hope to tie the knot next year.

“Frédéric’s the only person Shania trusts outside of her family,” says another insider. “She feels so lucky to have found him.”

Shania Twain is planning a “big surprise” for her fans.

The country music star posted a video on her website, promising to reveal the “special gift” on her 44th birthday next week.

In the clip - which was shot in the garden of Shania’s home in Switzerland - the singer thanks fans for remembering her son Eja’s eighth birthday, before giving hints about the surprise.

Shania said: “Hi everyone, Shania here. First to start off, I want to thank you for all the beautiful birthday wishes for Eja’s birthday. Secondly, if you haven’t already seen on my website for August 28 on my birthday, I will be giving you a small gift of thanks for all of your support over the last year… You’ve been really wonderful, thank you so much.”

The “gift” is thought to be a “very personal travelogue” documenting Shania’s 2008 split from her husband, producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, who reportedly had an affair with her best friend.

A source said: “It’s not new music, but it’s a piece that Shania put together of what she’s been doing for the last year. It’s definitely a totally new side of Shania that no one’s ever seen.”

Fans will also be able to watch Shania on TV later this month when she appears as a guest judge on ‘American Idol’.

It’s been almost seven years since Shania Twain released her last album of new songs, and if there’s anyone more frustrated than her fans about that fact, it’s the country superstar herself. In a revealing new letter posted on her official fan site, Shania writes about how the end of her marriage in 2008 has made it even more difficult to be productive.

“Music is the basis of our relationship,” Shania writes to her fans. “And I realize I’m not holding up very well on my end of the relationship… I wish like crazy that I had new music by now since I dream of how fun it would be to see you all again out on tour with new songs to sing, but as most of you know, I have been side-tracked slightly over this past year.”

“I’ve been inspired by my pain to write and use writing as a therapy through the suffering,” she reveals. “I truly wouldn’t wish this on anybody as a means to get inspired, but it’s been a productive period with so much emotion trying to find it’s way out.”

The country star explains that, as much as she loves her music and her fans, her children take top priority. “I am a mom and all my energy goes to making sure my little man is healthy and happy in every way,” she writes, referring to son Eja, who will turn 8 in August. “This is a full time job, as any parent understands, but especially difficult when you are battling your own personal crisis at the same time while trying to spare your child of being affected by your own suffering.”

She sounds like a great mom and a strong woman.

Shania Twain smiled radiantly after touching down at New York’s JFK Airport on Thursday following a flight from Switzerland. Perhaps her pearly-white grin was a result of her hunky traveling companion? Sources tell Star that the man is the husband of the woman who allegedly had an affair with Shania’s husband!

If you remember, when Shania and her music producer hubby, Robert “Mutt” Lange, announced the end of their marriage, it was alleged that they split because he was having an affair with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, who was the longtime secretary and house manager at Shania and Mutt’s Switzerland estate. Marie-Anne and her businessman husband, triathlete Frédéric Thiebaud, were close friends and often their two families would vacation and spend holidays together.

Close indeed.

Last month, Shania made her first public appearance since the split by appearing at the Country Music Awards in Nashville. The audience greeted her with a rousing ovation, and Kenny Chesney, whom she presented with an award, remarked on how great the post-split star looked.

Perhaps the true secret to how great she looks is her hot new romance.

Shania Twain, who was spotted at a Nashville hotel on Tuesday, is expected to be a presenter at the Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday night. ABC, which is airing the awards show, has been running ads promising a buzz-worthy surprise guest.

Nashville is buzzing all right: The CMAs will mark Twain’s first public appearance since the country crossover superstar, 43, announced her separation from husband Robert “Mutt” Lange, 60, in May.

Dividing her time between her native Canada and Switzerland, Twain “hasn’t put down her guitar since the split,” a source told PEOPLE in July. “The songs are pouring out of her.”

Twain took home the Entertainer of the Year CMA award in 1999, and was last in Nashville for the 2004 CMAs.

“She loves Nashville and is excited to spend time with all her friends that live there,” says a source close to Twain. “I would expect to see her more around town in the coming months.”
