Sarah Jessica Parker tried to quit Sex & The City

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker begged her agent to terminate her Sex & The City contract after signing up for the role.

The star was enjoying life dipping in and out of various New York projects and baulked at the prospect of being tied to a TV show for an entire series.

Her anxiety reached such a critical point, she called her agent in a panic and urged him to talk Sex And The City bosses out of recruiting her.

She says, “I had a wonderful life in New York. I was doing theater and movies, had plenty of free time and regularly saw my friends - so I was in a panic when I was told that I’d need to be around for regular filming.

“No one could calm me down. I kept thinking, ‘What can I do to escape?’ I’d call my agent, begging, ‘You have to get me out of this. I don’t care what it takes. Even if I’m broke on the street, I can’t do Sex And The City as a series.’”

However, she’s relieved she didn’t act on her irrational fears, following the show’s phenomenal success.

She adds, “The result, of course, is that they got me on the set for the first day and I never looked back.”

Sarah Jessica Parker: My son only wears hand-me-downs

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker: fashionista. Her son? Not so much.

“[James Wilkie, 5,] only wears hand-me-downs because I’ve got all these older nephews,” Parker, 43, says in the newest issue of Parade magazine.

“That’s the God’s honest truth,” swears the Sex and the City star. “Plus, my mother saved all my brothers’ clothes. I am not kidding. I don’t think I’ve ever bought him any clothes. Maybe a new winter’s coat….”

But just like her footwear obsessed SATC character Carrie Bradshaw, James Wilkie gets new shoes!

“I do buy him shoes, because everybody’s feet are different,” says Parker.

Parker grew up as one of eight siblings in an impoverished family, and doesn’t want her son to be spoiled.

“I think that if I had been raised a child of privilege, I wouldn’t be the working person I am today,” she says. “I think it’s incumbent on my husband [
] and me to really stress and to show James Wilkie by example what it means to owe your community something and that he is not entitled to the benefits of our hard work.

“That doesn’t mean that I’m withholding or keeping from him the joys of childhood — I’m not Joan Crawford,” she stresses. “But I also don’t want him to think the world he lives in is the real world. It’s not.”

Parker, who says she’s more comfortable in the role of James Wilkie’s mother than any other on-screen, insists on being a hands-on mother.

“I put him to bed every night. I get him dressed. I’m the one who gives him his toothbrush. I take him to school every morning,” Parker says. “He’s very small, but his personality is 6 foot 4.”

Her day-to-day is a far cry from Bradshaw’s glamorous life, which she portrayed on HBO for six years. Parker says her co-stars have also grown up in the movie, which hits theaters May 30.

“Carrie and Charlotte and Miranda and Samantha aren’t young anymore,” Parker says. “Their lives are much less frivolous. They can’t cope with their problems by putting on their sweats and staying up all night and ordering in food and gossiping about the men in their lives.

“There is less self-absorption but perhaps a little more self-awareness,” she adds.

Sarah Jessica Parker quit therapy because she had nothing to say

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker quit therapy when she realised she was more anxious about coming up with things to talk to her shrink about.

The Sex & The City star sought out a therapist to help her with a handful of personal problems many years ago - but she quickly realized her issues weren’t worth talking about.

She tells Parade magazine, “I’d be on the subway on the way there, and I’d panic that I wouldn’t have anything to talk about. It was not a really committed relationship. It was not for a long period of time… (but) there may come a time when I’m ready to be that introspective about myself.”

Sarah Jessica Parker says press attention makes her feel dirty

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker feels like New York’s “town trollop” because of the chaos caused by the paparazzi photographers who follow her every day.

The actress claims “thuggish” photographers have made a damaging and lasting impact on the lives of her family, and everyone they come into contact with.

She insists snappers have descended on her five-year-old son James Wilkie’s school, leaving her embarrassed to face other parents. She even claims James, her son with actor husband Matthew Broderick, now covers his face when posing for family photos.

Parker tells New York magazine, “(It’s a) culture of thuggery. I feel very ashamed. I feel like I’m, like, the town trollop. It makes me feel ashamed of my work. And I’m not. But I’m attached to this culture now in a way that it’s kind of vulgar. And I feel cheapened. And I feel like I’m cheapening the school, like I’m bringing dirt; like I’m bad for the neighborhood.”

SJP: “Kim Cattrall’s hold out made for a better movie”

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker holds no grudges against co-star Kim Cattrall, who held out from shooting the Sex and the City movie for years because she wanted more money.

“If I had thought it was any of my business at the time, what I would have said is, ‘Isn’t it okay for Kim to think the money wasn’t right?’” Parker says in the new issue of New York magazine.

She added, “Perhaps [Kim] was some kind of emotional psychic, because this way we made a better movie.”

Speaking of money, Parker shot down a reporter’s theory that her character Carrie Bradshaw has an attraction, conscious or unconscious, to Big because of his big bucks.

“I really don’t think money was a criteria [for their romance],” Parker insists. “It never would have occurred to her to take money from a man.”

What did attract Carrie to Big? He doesn’t care about her shoe obsession!

In the movie, Big buys her a new pad, complete with a huge closet.

“The closet was spectacular,” Parker tells Entertainment Tonight. “For her, the closet is the heart of the house.

“That’s what’s promising about Carrie’s relationship with Big,” she adds. “He doesn’t care [about her love for clothes] — he doesn’t judge it.”

She wouldn’t say whether Carrie weds in the movie, but admits, “we went through 40 or 50 dresses and did fitting after fitting after fitting. They literally came from every continent!”

Parker says the movie — out May 30 — is about “love, silliness and also sadness and loss and disappointment.

“[You see] how friends are necessary and how at a certain point, no one can fix [your problems] but yourself,” she adds. “That’s the difference of where Carrie is now and where she was in her 20s.”

Sarah Jessica Parker refuses to use Botox

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker has ruled out ever undergoing cosmetic surgery to preserve her good looks.

The 43-year-old actress is determined to grow old gracefully and vows never to succumb to the popular Hollywood trend of wrinkle-smoothing Botox injections.

She tells Britain’s Eve magazine, “I believe in ageing gracefully - and of course, buying as many anti-aging creams as possible!”

And the Sex And The City star insists she is not as stylish as her onscreen persona, fashionista Carrie Bradshaw: “I never dress up that much. I can’t even blow-dry my own hair and I don’t know how to put make-up on either! I never do my nails. I’ve probably worn nail polish twice in 10 years. I’ll admit I do know how to cover a zit and put on mascara and eyeliner, but I can only out my hair into a ponytail, nothing else.”
