Sandra Bullock has turned her Texas restaurant into an eco-friendly hang-out by replacing plastic and polystyrene takeaway containers with biodegradable alternatives made from sugar cane and potatoes. The environmentally-conscious star revealed all about her green secrets during a tour around Austin eatery Bess as part of an Earth Day special on TV show Oprah, which aired on Tuesday.

The star showed off coffee cups made out of sugar cane and corn syrup, cutlery made from potatoes and takeaway boxes made out of sugar cane. Bullock revealed she researched biodegradable alternatives when she first opened Bess in 2006 and discovered it only costs a little extra to become a green restaurateur.

She says, “The price difference… is minimal, it’s just a few cents, and I think we’re absolutely worth it; those few extra pennies to make sure we have a beautiful earth.”

Bullock’s restaurant also features recycled furniture, including dining tables made from the floorboards of a house she renovated. And she admits she has always been environmentally friendly: “We were raised that way. My mother was macrobiotic, health food, no chemicals, made all her own bed… I hated it then but I love it now because she recycled everything.”

Lucille Gatchell, the 64-year-old alleged drunk driver from Gloucester, Mass., who hit Sandra Bullock and Jesse James Friday night, was arraigned Tuesday in District Court.

She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and a marked lanes violation. No one was injured in the accident.

Despite entering a standard plea of not guilty, Gatchell’s lawyer gave a sincere thank you to Bullock and James after the hearing, according to the Boston Herald. “Miss Gatchell is very relieved that no one was injured,” defense attorney Benjamin Richard told reporters. “She also wants to express her gratitude to Ms. Bullock and Mr. James for what she understands was their concern for her well being after the accident.”

Gatchell will appear again in court for a pre-trial hearing on June 6.

Sandra Bullock and her husband Jesse James, were hit by a drunken driver last night in Gloucester, MA.

They were being driven to their hotel in Eastern Point at around 11 PM when a gray Subaru station wagon jumped lanes and smashed into their front end, police said.

The culprit, 64-year-old Lucille Gatchell was busted and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Liquor — in our world, that’s DUI. She blew 2 1/2 times the legal limit. She was also charged with a Mark Twain violation, which means crossing the white line.

No one was hurt.
