Salma Hayek is too upbeat to let her latest failed romance get her down, according to her close pal, Felipe Fernandez Del Paso.

The director insists the actress is doing well, despite recently calling off her engagement to businessman Francois-Henri Pinault, the father of her daughter Valentina.

And Del Paso insists the split wasn’t as shocking as the media suggested.

He says, “It came as a shock to you, but not to those who know her, and my friend is not depressed.

“They’re (Hayek and Pinault) both very intelligent; they have a daughter together and they’ll be able to work it out.”

Hayek’s publicist confirmed the split last week.

Salma Hayek and French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault — the father of her daughter Valentina — have called off their engagement.

“We are sad to announce the engagement of Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault has been canceled,” Hayek’s rep said in a statement to USA Today. “There will be no further comment.”

Hayek, 41, told the April issue of Glamour that she didn’t feel the “need” to get married.

“Do I think we are going to get married? Probably. Will it make a difference? I hope not,” she said.

“You want to grow old with someone, you want to have a partner and to have children — we have all those things,” Hayek added. “Some people need the commitment. Maybe we’ll just make the party!”

The two kept their relationship low-key since meeting in Venice in May 2006.

They revealed they were expecting around the same time they announced their engagement last March.

Valentina was born last September.

Initially, Hayek said she “wanted a boy.”

“Probably because I was afraid,” she told Glamour. “I think women suffer a bit more than boys, and there is always conflict between mothers and daughters.”

“Now that she’s here, I’m so happy she’s a girl,” Hayek said. “And I can’t imagine there ever being conflict between us, because I’m in a state of innocence where I love everything she does.”

Valentina is the first child for Hayek; Pinault, 45, has two children from a previous marriage.

Salma Hayek will marry her billionaire fiance Francois-Henri Pinault in a spectacular $3.5 million celebration next spring, according to reports.

The couple announced their engagement and Hayek’s pregnancy last year, which was followed by the birth of daughter Valentina in September.

Hayek and Pinault have enjoyed a low-key relationship, but sources tell the National Enquirer that the 46-year-old French boss of fashion houses Gucci, Yves St. Laurent and Balenciaga will dig deep for a five-day-long wedding ceremony in St. Tropez, France.

An insider reveals, “It took Francois over a year to get Salma to agree to marry him, and he doesn’t want to spare any expense.

Francois basically gave her the key to the vault and said, ‘Go wild.’”

The tabloid claims the pair will fly their friends in on private jets; put them up in luxury resorts; spend $500,000 on a wedding dress and almost $1 million on flowers.

Is it hard being over 40 in youth-obsessed Hollywood? No way, says new mom Salma Hayek.

“I’m 41 now,” she said while being honored at Tuesday’s Women in Film Crystal & Lucy Awards. “And I have to say, it is the best time in my life.”

That prompted Jada Pinkett Smith – who was also being recognized, along with her costars from the upcoming chick flick, The Women – to shout out, “You look good!”

Hayek – who gave birth to daughter Valentina Paloma last September with billionaire fiancé Francois-Henri Pinault – said she is finally coming into her own.

“I have learned to enjoy time to be a woman. I have learned to enjoy how to do the most that I can with what I have,” the Ugly Betty producer explained. “It is a good thing to be a 41-year-old Latina woman in America.”

She also gave a shout out to fellow Latina Eva Mendes (another star of The Women), who responded with a loud, “I love you, Salma!”

And when it comes to balancing motherhood and her busy career, Hayek has already learned the most important lesson. “I delegate a lot more,” she told People at the L.A. event. “I’m very lucky because I have great people around me.”
