Ryan Reynolds told pals of his engagement to Scarlett Johansson by sending a text message.

Reynolds’ Definitely, Maybe co-star Elizabeth Banks says the couple wanted to send a message, rather than call their pals.

She tells Usmagazine.com, “I texted him to say, ‘Are you really engaged or is this a joke?’ And he said, ‘Yes, we’re really engaged!’”

Johansson and Reynolds have been dating since February 2007, shortly after Blade: Trinity star Reynolds broke off his engagement to singer Alanis Morissette.

They announced their engagement earlier this month.

Only hours after the news broke that Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson had gotten engaged, the Van Wilder star’s former fiancée Alanis Morissette was spotted on a flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles, where eyewitnesses tell OK! the Canadian singer appeared unfazed by the announcement.

“Alanis seemed fine,” one of the pop star’s fellow passengers tells OK!, adding that she “looked beautiful.”

And, judging by the copy of OK! Magazine Alanis was intently reading during the flight, the best way to keep her mind off of her now-engaged ex-beau was to catch up on all the latest in celebrity news in the pages of OK!

Ryan and Alanis had been engaged for almost three years before finally announcing the end of their marriage plans in February of 2007. He began seeing Scarlett shortly after the split.

After dating for more than a year, Scarlett Johansson is set to marry her boyfriend Ryan Reynolds, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

“They’re both thrilled,” Johansson’s rep Marcel Pariseau tells PEOPLE.

Reynolds, 31, currently filming the aptly named The Proposal in Boston with Sandra Bullock, recently popped the question to Johansson, 23. The couple have not set a wedding date.

The Nanny Diaries star is expected to show off her sparkler at Monday night’s Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala in New York. Sources say Johansson is eager to “show off her rock” with her Dolce & Gabbana gown.

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds were spotted between scenes while filming ‘The Proposal’ in Rockport, MA on Thursday.

“The Proposal” concerns a demanding female boss (Bullock) faced with deportation to Canada who agrees to a sham engagement and marriage with her young male assistant (Reynolds).

Word from spywitnesses is that “The Proposal” star Ryan Reynolds and his galpal, Scarlett Johansson, had a bit of a lovers’ spat in the Financial District the other day.

According to someone who was there, the Tinseltown lovebirds were walking on Arch Street down by the church and having a raaather heated discussion.

“The Ryan guy was clearly being a baby,” said our spy. “She kept grabbing his arm and he’d yank it away and she’d keep saying ‘Ry, come on, Ry. Stop.’

“He kept switching directions on the sidewalk like he wanted her to leave, responding over and over, ‘Roger that!’ - whatever that was supposed to mean.”

The hostilities ceased when the couple noticed that there was a photographer trailing them.

“He grabbed her hand and stormed away,” said our snoop.

Reynolds, of “Definitely, Maybe” fame, is in town filming “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson was in town visiting him.

And if you believe the tabloids - and who doesn’t - there has been some trouble in lovelyland for the Tinseltown twosome. Word is, the couple is going through “a rough patch,” because Reynolds, 32, wants to tie the knot and his galpal is just 23 and very focused on her career at the moment.

“Scarlett is younger and has no desire for a husband or family just yet,” a source told London’s Daily Mail.

Guess you could say she rejected The Proposal.
