Portia de Rossi Is a Changed Woman Thanks to Marriage

Five months after her wedding to Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi is declaring that marriage has “completely changed my life.”

“Marriage is a different way of being together,” the actress told PEOPLE Friday while promoting her upcoming ABC series Better Off Ted at the Television Critics Association event in Pasadena, Calif.

Even though the couple have been together since 2004, tying the knot strengthened their bond. “There’s a peace to [being married] and a sense of togetherness that we just didn’t have before. And I didn’t even realize it would change as much as it has, but it’s so lovely,” said the actress.

“It’s legal, and it’s real, so there’s that kind of formality to it that makes it very valid,” added de Rossi. “I think the emotions that went with that as a gay woman kind of surprised me – that I would be that relieved to have my mother be present at the ceremony to bless the union, and to call [Ellen] her daughter-in-law.”

The actress said she’s also emerged as a more confident woman in recent years, both in her life and her career. “It’s so important to live an honest, open life and I didn’t really realize that until I started doing it,” she said.3

Ellen DeGeneres turned down offers to sing at her wedding from Justin Timberlake & George Michael

Ellen DeGeneres

Newlyweds Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi turned down offers from George Michael and Justin Timberlake to sing at their summer wedding in favor of a little known singer.

The pop superstars both offered to perform, with Timberlake going so far as planning to pen a new song especially for the two brides. But, when the couple chose to scale their wedding plans back to a more intimate family affair, the idea of inviting big name stars to perform in their garden seemed a little odd.

DeGeneres says, “We called and disinvited everyone. They totally understood.”

Instead, she asked Joshua Radin to sing at the wedding: “He was fantastic and was so thrilled and honored.”

Ellen DeGeneres hopes to inspire equal rights with her wedding to Portia de Rossi

Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi

Ellen DeGeneres hopes her marriage to actress Portia de Rossi will inspire generations to become more open-minded about same-sex unions.

The lesbian couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their Beverly Hills, California home on Saturday after the state lifted its ban on gay marriage.

And the 50-year-old insists the pair’s own marital obstacles could break down barriers for equal rights activists in the future.

DeGeneres says: “I feel like it is long overdue. And I think someday people will look back on this – like women not having the right to vote, and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous – like we all don’t have the same rights.”

Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi talk kids

Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi want to start a family together – but only if they can have beautiful babies.

The couple, who wed at their Beverly Hills, California home on Saturday, want to enjoy their own time before thinking about children.

But they admit it’s a possibility in the future. De Rossi says: “We go back and forth. I don’t know if it’s in our immediate future. It’s something we talk about every few months. We’ll know when the time is right if we’re going to do it.”

And DeGeneres jokes that their decision rests solely on looks: “If they would be as pretty as Brad and Angelina’s kids, we might.”

Ellen on the wedding: It was all a blur

Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi

With the “I Dos” still fresh on her mind, Ellen DeGeneres joined the coverage of her weekend nuptials by addressing her fans on the Web site of her syndicated TV show.

“I had a big weekend,” writes the Ellen DeGeneres Show host, 50. “I got married to Portia de Rossi! Sorry, John Stamos … this one’s taken.”

Pointing out the cursive-script-style of her message as it appears on her site (accompanied by a photo of the couple), Ellen writes, “You may notice something different about the way I’m writing … it’s fancy. This is the font I type in now that I’m MARRIED!”

Continuing in this vein, she also says, “I do a lot of things differently now … I say, ‘I do’ a lot. For example: Who wants to do pilates? I do. Would you like a Mountain Dew? I do. Do you know why I pulled you over? I do. And that was just this morning.”

As for Saturday’s ceremony, which was held at DeGeneres and De Rossi’s home in Los Angeles, DeGeneres states, “The wedding was everything we hoped it would be. I wish I could’ve invited all of you. But I have some pictures and video I can show you when Season 6 starts on September 8th. I can’t wait to see them too … it was all a blur.”

But, clearly, a happy one. DeGeneres signs off with, “Blissfully yours, The just married Mrs. DeGeneres” – with the “Mrs.” underscored.
