Patricia Arquette Defends Her Oscars Speech Amid Criticism

Patricia Arquette won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress on Sunday and used her acceptance speech as a medium to convey her thoughts on wage equality in Hollywood and for the rest of the nation. Now, amid criticism, she is defending her speech.

She clarified her comments in the press room after her acceptance speech. She told reporters, “The truth is, even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, right under the surface, there are huge issues that are applied that really do affect women. And it’s time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we’ve all fought for to fight for us now.”

Stacey Dash was apparently left unimpressed by Arquette’s speech. She said on Fox & Friends, “First of all, Patricia Arquette needs to do her history. In 1963, Kennedy passed an equal pay law. It’s still in effect. I didn’t get the memo that I didn’t have any rights.”

In response, Arquette took to her Twitter account to say, “Wage equality will help ALL women of all races in America. It will also help their children and society. Women have been basically paying a gender tax for generations. I have long been an advocate for the rights of the #LBGT community. The question is why aren’t you an advocate for equality for ALL women? If you are fighting against #Equalpay you are fighting for ALL women and especially women of color to make less money than men. Guess which women are the most negatively effected in wage inequality? Women of color. #Equalpay for ALL women. Women stand together in this.”

What do you think of her message?

Patricia Arquette Makes Passionate Speech About Wage Equality

Patricia Arquette Makes Passionate Speech About Wage Equality

Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Patricia Arquette stood up for wage equality during her passionate speech at the 87th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night.

She said in her speech, “To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s high time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.”

Backstage, she gave Meryl Streep a hug for standing up and cheering her on during her speech. She said, “She is the patron saint of actresses. It is time for women. Equal means equal. Older women get less money. The highest percentage of children living in poverty are in female-headed households. We talk about equal rights in other countries but not in our own country.”

She added, “One of the Supreme Justices said two years ago in a law speech at a university that we don’t have equal rights in America because when they wrote the Constitution they didn’t intend it for women. It’s time for women in America and all the men, all the gay men, the people of color, to fight for us now. We need federal laws that are comprehensive.”

Later, she commented, “It’s about time. People need to talk about this. There is no reason why in 2015 women and men aren’t making the same amount of money. It’s time to talk about it now.”
