A lawyer for Nicollette Sheridan is speaking about her $20 million suit against Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, whom she claims hit her in the face on the set and then fired in retaliation for complaining about him. (Cherry has yet to comment; ABC Studios says Sheridan’s claims are “without merit.”)

In a statement, Sheridan’s attorney Mark Baute tells UsMagazine.com: “Nicollette worked very hard on the show and was a model employee. Mr. Cherry’s behavior towards Nicollette was and is nothing short of abusive and appalling.

“The lawsuit is not something Nicollette wanted to do, it’s something she felt compelled to do. “Nicollette asked ABC for help and protection from Mr. Cherry’s abusive behavior, and ultimately, ABC was not willing or able to provide that protection.

“Sometimes the only way that a safe and normal work environment can be created is when a hard-working person like Nicollette stands up for herself and her rights, and in doing so help protect others who have had to work in a hostile environment.

“We expect the case to be hard fought, and it will not be a surprise if ABC and Mr. Cherry try to depict Nicollette to be something other than a team player and long-standing industry professional.

“She put her heart and soul into the role of the Edie character, a character that she truly enjoyed playing.”

As first reported by TMZ.com, former “Desperate Housewives” actress Nicollette Sheridan is suing series creator Marc Cherry on charges of assault and battery, gender violence, wrongful termination, and “intentional infliction of emotional distress.”

In the suit, obtained by EW, Sheridan alleges that Cherry created a “hostile work environment,” regularly “demeaning” writers and staff, and behaving in a “dismissive, demeaning, and unprofessional manner” towards her both on and off set.

She claims that on September 24, 2008, after she questioned something in the script, Cherry took her aside and “forcefully hit her with his hand across her face and head.” Although Sheridan immediately complained to ABC, she claims no action was taken.

The legal papers paint Cherry as someone who became hostile to those who “questioned his authority,” and Sheridan claims her complaints led directly to her termination. What’s more, the suit says, Cherry reportedly told third parties that “he hoped Sheridan would be distraught as a result of the termination.”

In a separate incident cited by way of example, Cherry allegedly once responded to “Housewives” co-star Teri Hatcher’s complaints to the network by saying, “I hope Teri Hatcher gets hit by a car and dies.”

Sheridan is seeking $20 million.

Desperate Housewives‘ Nicollette Sheridan isn’t sad about moving off Wisteria Lane.

“When the show started it was such a different beast,” she tells the new issue of TV Guide. “It was exciting and dangerous and funny and edgy and bizarre. It started feeling a little complacent, and that was very frustrating.”

When told of her character Edie Britt’s demise, “I said, ‘OK, sayonara. It’s been a great ride. Thank you,’” she tells the magazine.

She says she would’ve left sooner, but all the women were “contractually bound, so there was no way out on your own terms.”

Still, “[Killing off Edie] was a risky decision that could have devastating ramifications,” she warns creator Marc Cherry.

But, she adds, “Somebody up there really wanted her dead. I think whoever Edie represented in Marc’s life was somebody he didn’t like. And he had a very difficult time distinguishing between fact and fiction.”

Sheridan also takes aim at Cherry for ignoring her, never adding her face to the opening credits and rarely speaking about her in interviews.

Says Sheridan, “When you have a jewel, why not polish it and put it out there for all to see?”

But Cherry insists Sheridan’s character was no longer relevant on the show.

“Edie’s already slept with most of the guys on the street and has caused about as many problems as she could,” he says.

Plus, “There has been tremendous pressure put on me to cut costs … the network is saying to all the shows, ‘The company is really hurting financially. You must find a way to produce these shows more cheaply,’” he says.

With Sheridan gone, the show will save an estimated $100-200,000 per episode, according to TV Guide.

Asked about Sheridan’s replacement, Cherry says, “We will find a new kind of sexiness coming through Wisteria Lane.”

“What I won’t do is cast another fortysomething sexy blonde,” he adds. “[Sheridan] performed the aging, neighborhood tramp better than anyone has ever done before.”

Sheridan’s last episode airs Sunday.
