After weathering so many ups and downs throughout her career, Mariah Carey has never seemed more at peace. Strolling into a Brazilian restaurant in New York City for an exclusive interview with In Touch, Mariah is nothing like the diva she’s perceived to be. The Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter looks gorgeous, wearing little makeup and dressed casually in black pants, a black shirt and big black belt. Usually guarded about her love life, this time, she’s brought along her husband, Nick Cannon. “I love where I am in life right now,” Mariah, 39, tells In Touch as she sips on a glass of cabernet. And why shouldn’t she? She’s got a man who writes her love notes each morning, even after a year-and-a-half of marriage. She’s got a highly anticipated new album, which dropped September 29. She he is getting Oscar buzz for her gritty role in the upcoming movie Precious. And she and Nick definitely want to start a family! Over dinner, the couple opened up to In Touch about their solid marriage, having a baby and more.
So, are you ready for kids?
Mariah: Definitely, we want a family.
Nick: Yes, of course. It’s at the forefront of our minds. We’re very close. But we want to enjoy our first year together. We didn’t have a stable environment. The first year we were in LA in a hotel and then we were like, “Let’s get a house.”
Mariah: But don’t think I’m moving to LA.
Nick: We live in both places. We need to figure out where we are going to raise our kids. Here or LA.
Mariah: New York.
Nick: LA.
How many kids?
Nick: We’d like two.
Mariah: Of course, we’d be happy with one. I want to be able to manage the right amount of attention. We are so busy — if you have six kids running around, no one gets what they need. Kids need a lot of attention.
Would you consider adoption?
Nick: It’s never out of the question. I was raised by my grandmother, who was also a foster mom, so I grew up around a lot of kids.
So you can see yourself having one by the end of 2010?
Mariah: Yeah. What do you think?
Nick: I think that’s what the world is waiting for.
Mariah: Oh, my goodness, that’s so much pressure on our kids!
Would you mind gaining the baby weight?
Mariah: No, I wouldn’t mind. I’d be fine with it. I’m not one of those people who is usually a size 2 to start with and gets scared they will end up a size 3.
It seems like 40 is a pivotal age in Hollywood.
Mariah: I find it offensive. It unfairly taints women in particular, and makes people look at you differently. I lived with that my whole life. Honestly, I never thought I’d live this long.
You thought you’d die by now?
Mariah: I have always been grateful for everything I had, but my personal life was a mess. So many artists just exist for their careers and then burn out quickly. That was me before I met Nick, and he helped me. I always thought that I wouldn’t be here at this point. I was thinking, “Okay, I’ve got another year of my life left. This has got to be the end of it.” Finally, he was like, “Stop talking like that.” I have been obsessed with the whole Marilyn Monroe thing my whole life — all those artists who died young.
And Michael Jackson, too.
Mariah: Yes. Michael Jackson. At one point, we talked about that stuff. I can’t reveal what he thought. But yes, we had a conversation about it once.

It was a gesture designed to show the world how in love they were, but Mariah Carey didn’t think much of Nick Cannon’s attempts to kiss her on Oprah.
The singer was being interviewed by talk show host Oprah Winfrey when her husband came onstage and gave his wife a peck on the cheek.
But Oprah complained: ‘Oh you did that “We’ve been married a long time kiss”. You didn’t give the real kiss, come on.’
They shared an exaggerated smooch as Nick bent her over, before an uncomfortable looking Mariah stopped him, saying: ‘Don’t drop me!’
Then she pushed him away.
Mariah, 39, wed R’n'B singer Nick, 28, in April 2008 after they met at the Teen Choice Awards in 2005.

Nick said of their marriage: ‘I wake up feeling like the luckiest, most blessed man every morning.’
And when Oprah asked about the 11-year age difference between them, he said: ‘Age ain’t nothing but a number.’
Nick, who said he had always had a crush on Mariah growing up, said he told her: ‘I’m like, ‘Give me a chance.”
He also revealed that he had proposed by hiding a ring inside a lavender pink lollipop, saying he popped the question as they looked the Empire State Building from her New York apartment roof.
It had been lit up in lavender pink colours to mark her 18th number one record.
Mariah also showed Oprah how to apply her perfume, Forever – by squeezing a few drops between her breasts, and told her that she could learn from her moves.
And she also showed off her wedding ring.
Mariah said: ‘He [Nick] designed it and I’m very proud of him.’
The pair appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show live from New York’s Central Park.

America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan was left exhausted after Mariah Carey’s guest appearance on the show – because the singer forced production staff to work around the clock to make sure her “three-minute” appearance was perfect.
Earlier this month, the pop superstar appeared on stage during an episode of the hit TV show, which is hosted by her husband Nick Cannon, to belt out her new single ‘Obsessed.’
Carey wowed the judging panel – which also includes David Hasselhoff and Sharon Osbourne – with her pre-recorded performance.
But Morgan admits the spectacular rendition came at a price, because Carey had to make sure every tiny detail was perfect before she would let TV bosses air the footage.
“She’s such a perfectionist. We were all in the studio until nearly midnight as she planned her three-minute appearance, right down to the detail of the lighting, sound and camera angles. And work with producers in the editing suite apparently continued to 6 a.m. until she was absolutely happy. Mariah has the reputation of a diva. But like most divas – from Piaf to Whitney Houston to Madonna – that’s primarily because she’ll do whatever it takes, however long it takes, to get things as good as they can be,” said Morgan.

Mariah Carey’s husband Nick Cannon denies the superstar has taken a swipe at Eminem in her latest music video by dressing as the rapper – insisting she wouldn’t waste her time.
Carey trades in her usual glamorous look to dress as a thuggish man in the promo for new single Obsessed – in which her male persona has a striking resemblance to the Stan hitmaker.
Internet gossips presumed the Hero singer used the video to hit back at Eminem after he boasted of bedding the star in his track Bagpipes from Baghdad.
But Carey’s partner, actor/rapper Cannon, is adamant she wasn’t planning to take aim at the controversial hip-hop star with her cross-dressing video.
He tells MTV.com, “Honestly, I don’t think so. I don’t think that she would take her time. My wife doesn’t beef. She’s Mariah Carey. She’s not beefin’, she’s a vegetarian. I always say I thought the record was about me, ’cause I’m obsessed with my wife. But if somebody’s out there and you feel like you might have been obsessed, then the record’s about you.”
