Natalie Imbruglia has taken something positive from her split from rocker husband Daniel Johns - their painful break up has given her music a major boost.
The Torn hitmaker admits that she makes her best records when she has experienced painful events in her life, and her impending divorce has given her plenty of material for her new album.
Imbruglia wrote her 1998 debut, Left of the Middle, about a broken heart and it went on to be a major international success.
Her two subsequent albums, made while she was happily married, have failed to emulate the success of her first record - debuting in the U.K. at number three and 12 respectively.
And she is convinced that her forthcoming third studio album, the follow up to last year’s greatest hits compilation, will be her best work in years.
She says, “After a break from songwriting, my life experiences have really helped me to be more creative. I think when it comes to creativity, I am more inspired by suffering than happiness.”
Imbruglia and Silverchair frontman Johns split in January after five years of marriage.

Natalie Imbruglia is dating American nightclub entrepreneur Chris Paciello, after they were set-up by Madonna.
The Torn hitmaker met Paciello at a private party last year, while she was still married to Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns.
And Madonna was keen to re-introduce the pair after Imbruglia’s four year marriage ended earlier this year. Imbruglia admits the couple have dated, but denies it is serious.
She says, “Chris and I were introduced through Kevin Spacey’s manager and we have been out a few times. We go out when I’m in LA. He’s sweet and funny, but I don’t want to say any more than that.”

Australian pop star Natalie Imbruglia and her rocker husband Daniel Johns announced their separation in a joint statement Friday.
“While we are very sad that our marriage has ended, we want to make it clear that our parting is amicable and we remain friends,” the statement read, noting that the decision has not been made “lightly or quickly.”
The “Torn” singer, 32, and Silverchair frontman, 28, had been together since 1999. The split comes just days after their fourth anniversary: They wed on New Year’s Eve in 2003 at the Thala Beach Lodge, an exclusive resort on Australia’s northeastern coast. (According to media reports, guests included singer Kylie Minogue, actor Guy Pearce and Virgin mogul Richard Branson.)
However, their work commitments often kept them apart, with Imbruglia based in London while Johns toured frequently in Australia and North America.
“Our career demands and our lives in different parts of the world have brought us to the point where unfortunately this difficult decision was necessary,” they said in the statement. “We have simply grown apart.”
The two musicians – tabloid darlings in their native Australia – also vowed that their breakup would not play out in the media. “We will not be making any further public statements whatsoever in regard to this very private matter,” the statement read. “[We] politely ask that people respect our sincere wishes in this regard.”

Australian singer/actress Natalie Imbruglia has been dropped from her role as spokesmodel for cosmetics giant L’Oreal. The stunning Torn hitmaker, 32, signed a $200,000 deal in early 2002 to appear in TV and print advertisements for the beauty company, uttering the famous slogan, “Because I’m worth it.”
However, Imbruglia admits her contract has now ended with the firm - who boast Beyonce Knowles, Eva Longoria, Kate Winslet and Scarlett Johansson amongst their famous spokesmodels.
She says, “Apparently I’m not worth it anymore. (The slogan) is so funny. Saying it is ridiculous. You really have to get in character.
“I had to say it in so many languages.”
