New mom Naomi Watts is to take on Tippi Hedren’s iconic film role in a remake of Alfred Hitchcock thriller The Birds.

The actress will play Melanie Daniels in the new film, an updated adaptation of the classic Daphne du Maurier novel, in which a woman is attacked by a flock of angry birds on a remote island.

Casino Royale filmmaker Martin Campbell is in negotiations to direct the movie.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber welcomed their first child, a healthy baby boy, on Thursday.

Alexander Pete Schreiber (a celebrity who names their child a NORMAL name?  What’s wrong with them!), who was born at 3:59 p.m. in Los Angeles, weighs 8 lbs., 4 oz, and is 22.5 inches long, according to a rep for Watts.

Just last weekend, Watts, 38, and Schreiber, 39, celebrated with a baby shower at their Los Angeles-area home. Among the approximately 15 guests were Kate Hudson and actress Carla Gugino.

The pair started dating in 2005, and news of the baby was first announced this past February by Schreiber himself on NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

When it came to selecting a name for the child, Schreiber told O’Brien, “I’m trying to stay out of it all,” though he made clear the baby would not be called Liev.

“It’s an awful name,” said Schreiber. “It’s probably the most oft-mispronounced name in showbiz.”

Last month, Watts told PEOPLE of her pregnancy: “[I’m] just being relaxed and moving at a much slower pace and enjoying it. I’m just really happy to be pregnant.”

Naomi Watts has been cast to appear in the new Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.”

Watts, set to give birth in a few weeks, has just signed on for the supporting role of Draco’s nasty mother Narcissa Malfoy. The actress won’t have to start work on the film until September.

Also joining her are smoldering hunks Joseph Fiennes and Stuart Townsend, and whilst their roles haven’t been specified it’s expected both will tie into the flashbacks into the history of Voldemort. It’s quite possible Joseph will play either the father of or a younger version of the character his brother Ralph Fiennes portrays.

The two key new roles of Potions master Horace Slughorn and new Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour have yet to be announced but both skew decidedly older than either Fiennes or Townsend.
