Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher launch a “Save Mischa Barton” campaign!

The Kabbalah-following couple want to spearhead the recovery of the deeply troubled actress, who landed in a Los Angeles psychiatric unit after a bizarre meltdown.

“Demi and Ashton both feel Mischa has an incredible career ahead of her if she can free herself from her demons of poor self-esteem and substance abuse,” said a source.

The couple believes the teachings of Kabbalah – a type of Jewish mysticism – can help Mischa, the source said, adding that both Demi and Ashton generously reached out to Mischa’s family to offer their assistance.

Ashton feels particularly responsible for Mischa because he’s overseeing the production of her new series, The Beautiful Life in which she plays a hard partying aging model. Ash personally selected her for the role.

According to an insider, Ashton learned of Mischa’s sorry state when they filmed the pilot in Canada several months ago.

“Mischa was seen several times sobbing to a friend on her cell phone,” confided the insider.

After she was placed under involuntary psychiatric hold on July 15, Ashton and Demi stepped in.

“Demi told Ashton that they had to do something to help,” the source divulged.

A week after she was placed under psychiatric hold, Mischa Barton is “still seeking treatment but making improvements,” says her rep Craig Schneider.

Schneider would not elaborate on Barton’s condition, but said that the actress, 23, plans to report to work on her new CW series The Beautiful Life later this month.

A rep for the show, which stars Barton as a struggling supermodel, tells Usmagazine.com shooting is slated to start July 31. (Entertainment Weekly quoted “multiple sources” Tuesday saying that producers “are quietly readying a Plan B” in light of the actress’ hospitalization.)

The hard-partying Barton was placed under involuntary psychiatric hold at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center July 13.

“She’s going through a rough patch,” says Benji Kohn, producer of Barton’s new thriller Homecoming.

Director Morgan J. Freeman tells Us, “I hope Mischa is doing OK. My thoughts and prayers are with her.”

Mischa Barton’s personal demons not only included a DUI arrest, relationship breakups and a hospitalization at a psychiatric ward – the actress also struggled with a fluctuating weight and body image.

“She has big self-esteem issues. … She hates her legs,” says a source close to Barton. “She isn’t comfortable with her body. It’s been a big source of stress and self-hate.”

Speculation about 23-year-old actress’s weight and nasty comments from tabloids and blogs also fueled insecurity.

“She had a big problem with those photos of her cellulite. … She didn’t like it,” says another source. “That just was something that contributed to her spiraling but she didn’t do much to fix it because of her partying.”

While another friend tells PEOPLE the photos upset the former O.C. star – “[She was] more pissed off than hurt and she complained a lot about that” – she didn’t let them get “to her too much. … I never saw her diet.”

But when photos showed a thinner Barton, she took to her blog and spoke out about the “crazy press,” telling fans that she’s “happier and healthier than ever so there’s no need to worry about me.”

“Just be happy and secure with yourself,” she wrote on her Web site. “Don’t let other people’s perceptions of you dictate the way you live your life.”

Mischa Barton was submitted involuntarily to a California mental health facility last week, and she’s still there. According to insiders, friends and associates have been trying to get Mischa into some sort of treatment for months, including party pal Lindsay Lohan.

The two club regulars often partied together into the early morning hours. But last year, Lindsay walked away from the friendship after a messy Mischa pushed Lindsay over the edge. Sources close to Lohan tell Fox 411 that the two girls haven’t spoken for months, but Lindsay would help Mischa if she asked for help to get through this latest fiasco.

“Lindsay and Mischa used to go out all the time together in Los Angeles. They were like kindred spirits when it came to clubbing and letting loose,” says the insider. “ They have many mutual friends, but everything shifted for Lindsay last year at a party. Mischa was completely out of control, and Lindsay sat Mischa down then to make it clear that she needed help. Lindsay was desperate for Mischa to clean herself up and offered a treatment facility and a therapist to help Mischa. Mischa completely ignored Lindsay, and that was the end.”

Several people close to the “OC” actress tell FOX411 she’s been on a downward spiral for years. “No one close to her is surprised,” says one pal. “Alcohol was like the gateway to other things for Mischa. Nobody has been able to stop her until now. Hopefully this psychiatric hold will force her to seek real help.”

Mischa’s latest stylist deserted her as well, says the insider, warning that ”Mischa must get help or she will be all alone. She can’t continue down the path of the last two years or so. It’s destructive and it will end her career for good.”

Production on Mischa Barton’s new CW drama The Beautiful Life has been postponed as the actress remains under psychiatric evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Shooting was to begin July 22 but will now start July 31, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Despite the actress’ hospitalization, the production schedule was changed due to some of the sets not being completed, the paper reports.

Beautiful Life, which is executive produced by Ashton Kutcher, centers on a group of models living together in a coed residence in New York. Barton plays a supermodel and veteran of the high-fashion circuit who is struggling to keep on top and is in danger of slipping.

The series is slated to premiere Sept. 16.

There is still no word on when Barton will be released from the hospital.

A producer on Mischa Barton’s new flick Homecoming isn’t thrilled she missed the NYC premiere after being involuntarily checked into a psych ward Wednesday.

“It’s frustrating. And it’s not ideal,” Bingo Gubelmann told Usmagazine.com at the Thursday premiere. “It’s frustrating, but I’m not going to sit here and trash her because we’re young as a company and we’ve got to live and learn…I don’t want to be known as the producer that will turn on any actress at the drop of that hat.”

While rolling his eyes, Gubelmann continued that “it’s hard to remember” why he chose Barton to star in his indie flick, “because, you know, she’s not here right now.

“Now, I haven’t spoken to her yet because she’s totally unreachable, so I don’t know exactly what happened. I mean, I’m not as good at taking the high road a some people and yes, it would obviously be nice if she was here. Even just to hang out,” he went on.

Gubelmann said Barton didn’t seem “at all” unstable while shooting the flick in less than a month, 16 hours a day.

“She did it and she did an amazing job. It’s like, maybe she went method and maybe that’s what happened!” he said, laughing.

Producer Austin Stark was more sympathetic toward the actress, who required a police escort from her Hollywood Hills home to the hospital.

“I think we would have loved to have had her come out and support the movie, [but] you know, we wish her the best and obviously we hope she gets better,” he told Us. “Obviously, it’s a trying time for her. I mean, obviously we’d like her to be here but I don’t think it hurts the movie.”

Added producer Benji Kohn: “She’s going through a rough patch and she can’t be here. And it’s really too bad.”

Director Morgan J. Freeman told Us: “I hope Mischa is doing OK. My thoughts and prayers are with her. Health first, movie second.”

Almost a year after describing her DUI arrest as “a low point,” Mischa Barton – who called police with a health problem Wednesday – may be hitting another rough patch.

“She has been dealing with a lot of personal issues,” a pal tells PEOPLE about the actress who has been spotted club hopping in L.A. and London the past few months. “I don’t know if she really ever gave up some of the bad habits that had gotten out of control a couple years back.”

The 23-year-old actress was scheduled to attend the premiere of her movie Homecoming Thursday night in New York City but Access Hollywood reports she remained at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles under psychiatric hold.
