Matt Lauer sort of apologizes for being mean.

Mark Zinni interned for the Today show in 1997. He called out Matt Lauer this past Tuesday on his Twitter account for not being nice.

The Tweet did reach Matt Lauer’s attention. So he responded to it via Twitter with a kind of half hearted apology.

“I was an intern there in ’97, his first year on the job…how do I say this…? He was… not nice,” Zinni tweeted at a friend earlier that day.

Several of the journalist’s online friends and followers jumped at the reference to Lauer, asking Zinni to clarify his statement. Several hours later, Zinni retweeted a pal’s comments.

“‘I was just a young kid with a bright future ahead of me,’ Mark Zinni talking about internship at Today and ‘not so nice’ Matt Lauer,” the follower wrote.
That follow-up retweet must have caught Lauer’s eye, because the 55-year-old talk show cohost later took it upon himself to respond to the claims personally.

“Huh? Always tried to be nice Mark. Sorry you didn’t think so,” Lauer wrote in a tweet directed at Zinni. “Hope you’re doing well. Matt.”

Zinni, who is currently a Cleveland-based anchor and reporter, addressed the resulting media attention in a post to the Fox 8 website on Thursday, March 28.

“If you know me, you probably know that I don’t take myself too seriously,” he wrote, adding that he had “an amazing internship” at the Today show back in 1997. “So, my answer was more of a joke about being young and naive during my time at Today, but I added that he wasn’t nice to me.”

“I didn’t slam the guy, I just made an honest comment,” he continued. “Bottom line, I was shocked Matt Lauer even bothered with me and, really, he remembers me? I’m flattered.”
Zinni’s comments about Lauer are just the latest in a series that have painted the veteran TV journalist in a less than flattering light.

Earlier this week, Lauer made headlines after a New York magazine story revealed the true behind-the-scenes drama at the Today Show surrounding Ann Curry’s departure — with Lauer seemingly in the middle of it all.

“Everybody at NBC, everybody at the Today show, everybody understood that Ann was kicked out of her position because Matt didn’t want her there,” a prominent NBC staffer told New York writer Joe Hagan. “That’s why it was so personal between Ann and Matt.”

Lauer seems to be getting a lot of negative press lately. People will probably be looking at him in a different light now.

Matt Lauer Says Cheating Allegations Are ‘Ridiculous’ & ‘Not True’

News anchorman Matt Lauer has angrily dismissed reports suggesting he and his wife have split.

“The Today Show” host was alleged to have cheated on his wife of 12 years, Annette, with a relative of Whitney Houston’s while he was covering the Winter Olympics in Vancouver earlier this year.

But he insists that story and another one suggesting he had moved out of the family’s home are works “of fiction.”

Lauer tells People magazine, “I am living in my apartment with Annette and my children as a family and a couple. I have never moved out. I am not moving out. There is no truth to that.”

The newsman reveals he and Annette, a former model, haven’t had an easy marriage – but he would never cheat on his wife.

He adds, “The stories you’ve read over the years are not true… I don’t think we’re any different than any married couple that’s been together for 12 years. The accusations (of cheating) are ridiculous and I’m not going to (dignify) them with an answer. It’s not true.”

His wife has also spoken to the magazine, admitting the couple has had marital problems in the past, but, “We have worked through it.”

SPLIT: Is the latest celebrity cheater Matt Lauer?

After weeks (maybe months) of speculation, it’s looking like Matt Lauer and his wife of twelve years, Annette Lauer are in fact splitting.

The National Enquirer reported that Matt Lauer had been having an affair while he was in Vancouver, BC covering the Olympics. According to a source at the Today Show, Matt moved out of his family home two months ago, and Annette is no longer wearing her wedding ring.

More from RadarOnline:

Suspicions were first sparked when Matt stood Annette up for Valentine’s Day, choosing instead to stay in Vancouver, where a source says Matt was often spotted boozing and flirting with women – in particular two pretty Canadian broadcasters.

To add fuel to the fire Matt decided to stay behind in Canada after the Today Show crew returned to New York at the end of the Olympics.

Annette, reportedly was informed of her husband’s flirting by the wife of another staffer, got the names of the two female broadcasters he was spotted getting especially cozy with, and confronted Lauer upon his return home.

Lauer denied all accusations, insisting the women were just friends, but after two non-stop days of fighting finally moved out into his own digs.

Matt hasn’t always been the model husband. Matt reportedly carried on an affair until just before his 1998 wedding. In 2006 – while pregnant with their third child, Annette filed for divorce feeling she could no longer trust her husband.  (She later withdrew the petition).

According to the show insider, “Matt is trying to keep this [split] on the down low.” In addition, sources say that Lauer’s NBC bosses are pressuring the presenter to maintain his image as a solid family man to appeal to his largely female audience.

The source goes on to say, “Matt is still very involved in his children’s lives. He goes to the family apartment after he finishes his Today duties to see the kids – and picks them up from school.

“For their sake, he and Annette plan to continue getting together on weekends – and they’ll go to their house in the Hamptons.”
