Maggie Gyllenhaal had an early taste of what it’s like to be a celebrity new mom when members of the paparazzi reported a fake fire at the actress’ apartment block – just so she’d come out into the street with her baby.

The Secretary star still can’t believe the lengths some people will go to just to get a photograph, but the early morning fire alarm was the lowest blow for her.

She says, “The paparazzi were just really awful to us. I mean, they called the fire department and told them there was a fire in our little, tiny building in the West Village (New York) so that we would have to come outside with a five-day-old baby.”

The bogus fire alert almost led Gyllenhaal to turn down the role of Rachel Dawes in the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight.

She tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, “I was trying to navigate my way through that (media intrusion) when this offer came. I thought, `It’s going to push that stuff further probably.’ But what am I going to do? I’m going to hide and not do things that are appealing to me? I’m an actress.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal hates choosing her dresses for high-profile film premieres – because the press always criticizes her outfits.

The actress has admitted to having a few fashion mishaps when it comes to red carpet couture, and admits she has been left heartbroken by the media’s harsh critiques.

She tells the Marie Claire magazine, “Sometimes it freaks me out. I’ve been so hurt and felt so bad.”

But Gyllenhaal insists she is learning to accept the criticism, adding: “People will always say mean things about you if you put yourself out there.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal is quitting New York because she has been hounded out of the city by the paparazzi.

The actress, her fiance Peter Sarsgaard and daughter Ramona, have already abandoned Manhattan for more suburban Brooklyn, in a bid for more privacy.

But the Dark Knight star claims they may have to move further afield to escape intrusion.

Gyllenhaal tells Moviefone, “It’s a constant effort. When we moved out of the city, to Brooklyn, that helped a lot. Still, there will be paparazzi, but I just know. I will never take Ramona into SoHo, I will never ever take her into the West Village, because they’ll pounce on her. We’ll probably ultimately just move to the country. Then you come into the city, you know what to expect, there’ll be some paparazzi. I’ll go to an event, I’ll get dressed up, they can take my picture there (and) just have my family life be separate.”

New lingerie ads of Maggie Gyllenhaal have left the actress stunned – because she had no idea they’d be plastered all over New York.

The Secretary star is now having second thoughts about signing on as a spokesmodel for underwear giant Agent Provocateur last year after realizing what became of something she viewed as “an art project”.

She says, “I was looking at (my) Agent Provocateur ads with (husband) Peter (Sarsgaard), saying, ‘I don’t think I look like that. That underwear really is good!’ I couldn’t believe how it made me look. When they came out, though, I was a but surprised. Somehow I hadn’t understood that there’d be all these pictures of me out there in my underwear. I did it as an art project.”

In the steamy billboard ads, Gyllenhaal appears to be taking a bubble bath, wearing lingerie and handcuffs.
