Well, it’s about time! Levi Johnston attemps to apologize to Palin family and particularly Sarah Palin.

“Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize.”

“So to the Palin family in general and to Sarah Palin in particular, please accept my regrets and forgive my youthful indiscretion,” Johnston says in the statement. “I hope one day to restore your trust.”

Briston Palin also added her own statement and had this to say on the matter.

“Part of co-parenting is creating healthy and honest relationships between the parents. Tripp one day needs to know the truth and needs to know that even if a mistake is made the honorable thing to do is to own up to it.”

For some reason, Levi Johnston had thought it in his best interest to attack the Palin household in the past. He claimed the Palin’s often talked of divorce and that Sarah Palin complained about her job as Alaska’s Governor. He talked about his sex life on Tyra Banks and even posed for Playgirl magazine.

Briston and Levi were in a custody battle over their son Tripp, but have since resolved their issue and are working together as co-parents.

Sounds like Levi is finally maturing!

New court documents reveal a heated custody battle between Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin, who has petitioned for sole custody over their son Tripp — the grandson of former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Bristol’s early November request for sole custody was made public after a Superior Court judge ruled last week against keeping the court proceedings closed, the Associated Press reports. A temporary order had authorized the use of pseudonyms while the court was considering the request, which stated that no good “could result to the child by an onslaught of media.”

Johnston, 19, had pushed for open court proceedings.

“I feel more comfortable in a public courtroom which will help everyone stay civil and be on their best behavior,” he said in a statement.

Johnston is seeking shared custody and denies Bristol’s claims that he has avoided his parental responsibilities, according to the Associated Press.

In addition to sole custody, Bristol — who called her ex’s recent Playgirl magazine nude photo shoot “risque” — requested child support and asked that Johnston’s mother, Sherry, not be allowed unsupervised visits with their son following her drug arrest earlier this year.

“The best interests of the child compel the conclusion that Bristol should be awarded 100 percent legal and physical custody of Tripp, with visitation rights in favor of Levi,” Bristol’s attorney Thomas V. Van Flein said in the papers.

Bristol and Johnston broke off their engagement shortly after 1-year-old Tripp was born in December 2008.

Levi Johnston did not reveal all in his photo shoot for Playgirl, a spokesman for the magazine tells Usmagazine.com

“Although Playgirl is ecstatic with the footage of the Levi Johnston shoot, and viewers are going to be pleased and surprised, Levi did not go completely full frontal, as was suggested by his camp a few weeks ago,” Playgirl rep Daniel Nardicio tells Us.

In late October, Johnston’s manager Tank Jones told Us that the 19 year-old Alaskan was “ready to shock the world.” Johnston himself proclaimed: “I just get naked. That’s what I do.”

Alas, says Nardicio, “Levi looks great in the shoot, and was a consummate professional, and we look forward to releasing the photos very soon.”

Responding to Playgirl’s statement, Jones told Us simply, “People need to wait. I was on the shoot. I know what was shot.”

After the excitement of his photo shoot Nov. 12 and 13, Johnston spent his Monday in front of the TV — watching Sarah Palin’s appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

“We watched it together,” Tank Jones tells Us. “He was really upset. He knew that it was all fake, even the laugh.”

“I can’t speak for him,” Jones continued. “I thought she was very, very sarcastic.” When Palin called Johnston ‘Ricky Hollywood,’ for example, “That was a joke between us,” Jones explained. “This young man wants to let this go, but, if she wants to keep it going then let’s roll. We’re trying to move past this, but, she keeps bringing stuff up.”

Jones added that Johnston plans to “address this stuff.” On top of the list are Palin’s claims that she didn’t know Bristol and Johnston were having sex. “If you knew, what kind of parent are you? If you didn’t know, what kind of parent are you?”

Sarah Palin doesn’t scare him! Levi Johnston tells The Insider that he’s not going down without a fight, and will be filing for joint custody for his son with Bristol Palin, Tripp.

Levi says he is taking legal action after he had trouble over the weekend trying to see his son.  Maybe his Playgirl shoot had something to do with that?

“At the end of the month I’m going to file for joint custody of Tripp,” Levi explained. “It’s not working. I’m done. It’s going to have to go to court. They just finally pushed me over the edge.”

Last year, Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin became the poster children for teen pregnancy. Now the Alaskan boy-next-door turned international newsmaker jokes about using protection in a new ad.

In a campaign for Wonderful Pistachios, Levi — with his bodyguard/publicist Tank by his side — swaggers toward the camera wearing a green Alaska shirt and jeans. While photographers snap photos of him and scream his name, the father of Sarah Palin’s grandchild cracks open a nut and pops it in his mouth while a voiceover says: “Now Levi Johnston does it with protection.”

Although he doesn’t utter a single word, this marks Levi’s commercial acting debut. Since Levi split with the failed vice presidential candidate’s eldest daughter earlier this year, he’s made no secret about his desire to become famous — even signing on with a Hollywood agent. He also posed shirtless with his son, Tripp, in GQ magazine.
