During an interview with Extra TV, Larry King revealed that he was one of Ponzi scheme king Bernie Madoff’s victims, saying that invested almost $700,000 — all of which he got back. He said that his money was returned by the government as well as the Madoff estate, but he recognizes that he’s one of the lucky ones.
“We got it back — but a lot of people sure didn’t,” he said.
The Madoff family is back in the headlines after Bernie’s ex-wife Ruth revealed to 60 Minutes that she and her ex-husband attempted suicide on Christmas Eve 2008, just two weeks after his arrest.
Last December in New York, Bernie’s 46-year-old son Mark Madoff hanged himself with a dog leash while his 2-year-old son was sleeping in the next room. It was the second anniversary of his father’s arrest.
Bernie is service a 150 year sentence for his eleven felonies.
Angelina Jolie is already the mother of six – and she may not be done. The superstar actress spoke with Larry King on Wednesday night, telling the host that she and husband Brad Pitt have no plans for another child at the moment, but that the famed couple is, “Always open [to the idea].”
Jolie – who has opened up extensively about her children recently, takes her brood to many of her film shoots and promotional appearances. One downside, however, is all the paparazzi attention the kids get.
“I do hope there will at some point be laws about how close they can get to children with cameras,” she said, “because I think at some point, it’s gonna be clearer that it’s emotionally not healthy.”
So, without those laws in place, how does she handle the constant demand for photos?
“Well, we try not to get them into the middle of it… but when they do, we just have to kind of smile and say, ‘Don’t worry, it’s not scary. They just like to take pictures,’” she told King. “As a parent, the only thing you can do is try to make sure that they don’t feel it’s a threat, you don’t act like it’s a threat, and you just keep smiling so they don’t feel anything negative.”
A spokesperson for Larry King announced today that Shawn King, Larry’s wife, is recovering from an apparent prescription drug overdose. The overdose happened at Shawn’s home in Provo, Utah on May 28th according to the AP.
Shawn’s father, Karl Engemann was the one to discover his daughter unresponsive in bed. According to the 911 transcript, Shawn was breathing, but Karl was unable to wake her. When he called 911, Shawn’s father told the 911 dispatcher that he believed his daughter had taken too much medication for depression or anxiety. He did not think his daughter had attempted suicide.
When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found several empty prescription bottles, some had been filled within the previous 10 days.
A handwritten note found on the scene indicated Shawn, 50, had taken the pills on purpose. A second note indicated she’d like to be buried in Utah. The police report didn’t mention why Shawn might have wanted to harm herself.
The Kings filed for divorce in April, though the couple has since reconciled. Shawn is Larry’s seventh wife. They pair got married in 1997 and have two sons.
Man, that’s really too bad, hopefully Shawn gets the help she needs.
