Kirsten Dunst in Patrik Ervell tux: Love it or Hate it?

Kirsten Dunst showed up at last night’s CFDA Awards wearing a Patrik Ervell tux. While I love how a suit looks on a girl, this one I’m not a huge fan of. I think if she had chosen a different top, I would have liked it. The shirt is too rigid looking, buttoned all the way to the top. Paired with the tight bun, she just looks stiff. I think maybe even if she would have unbuttoned the top, it would look better.

What’s your take?

Kirsten Dunst wins Best Actress award at Cannes!

Actress Kirsten Dunst, 29, won Best Actress for her performance in Melancholia. Melancholia was directed by Lars von Trier, who was banned from Cannes last week for his Nazi comments.

French actor Jean Dujardin won the prize for Best Actor for his role in the silent film The Artist, while Nicolas Winding Refn was honored as Best Director for his film Drive.

Prizes were awarded by the nine-member jury headed by Robert De Niro. The panel also included actors Uma Thurman and Jude Law.

VIDEO: Watch Lars von Trier make the Nazi comments that got him banned from Cannes

I think my favorite part of the video is watching Kirsten Dunst squirm. She is obviously upset about his comments (who wouldn’t be!), and you can see if she could be anywhere else in the world at that moment, she would be.

I can tell that von Trier was trying to be funny, he obviously has an off-color sense of humor. But maybe – just  maybe – a press conference for your new movie isn’t the place to say you’re a Nazi.

In case you missed it – after the press conference above – the director was banned from appearing at the Film Festival, though his movie is still in running for the top prize.

“The Festival de Cannes provides artists from around the world with an exceptional forum to present their works and defend freedom of expression and creation. The Festival’s Board of Directors, which held an extraordinary meeting this Thursday 19 May 2011, profoundly regrets that this forum has been used by Lars Von Trier to express comments that are unacceptable, intolerable, and contrary to the ideals of humanity and generosity that preside over the very existence of the Festival.

The Board of Directors firmly condemns these comments and declares Lars Von Trier a persona non grata at the Festival de Cannes, with effect immediately.”

‘Melancholia’ premieres in Cannes!

The night before being banned from Cannes, Lars von Trier stepped out to support his new film, ‘Melancholia’.

Kirsten Dunst wore this ugly (if you ask me) Rodarte dress, while Charlotte Gainsbourg steps out in some equally strange see-through outfit. I’m not sure who comes out ahead! Check out all the pictures (which include Jodie Foster) below!

Director Lars von Trier throws Kirsten Dunst under the bus at Cannes

Controversial director Lars von Trier already got himself into trouble today by calling himself a Hitler-sympathizer and Nazi, and at a press conference today he threw his leading lady under the bus.

After telling reporters that he wanted to make hardcore porn with Kirsten Dunst, he also spoke of her battle with depression.

Explaining the dark moods of Dunst’s character in ‘Melancholia,’ von Trier told a room full of reporters, “I would say Kirsten, thank god, has some knowledge of depression. We talked a lot about how things should look and I think she is doing extremely well.”

Dunst remained quiet and slunk into her seat. The director looked to her. She nodded slowly.

It’s a good hook for the film, which stars Dunst as a bride battling depression on her wedding day amidst a terribly depression situation — the end of the world.

The actress opened up about her battle with depression in 2008 after she went into rehab for the illness at the famous Cirque Lodge in Utah. She admitted she was sick only to clear up rumors that she had been committed for drug and alcohol abuse.

She later revealed to New York magazine, “I think most people in their twenties go through some sort of depression. If you’re successful at a young age, no matter the profession, there has to come a time when you reevaluate everything, what it means to you. Is this what I want to do for the rest of my life?”

Controversial director Lars Von Trier claims “I’m a Nazi” at Cannes premiere of his new movie!

Lars Von Trier, a director who is used to controversy (in 2005, he said President Bush dreams of being spanked by Condeleezza Rice), has done it again. While promoting his new film, Melancholia, in Cannes, he confessed that he is “a Nazi” who “understands Hitler”.

“The only thing I can tell you is that I thought I was a Jew for a long time and was very happy being a Jew, then later on came [Danish and Jewish director] Susanne Bier, and suddenly I wasn’t so happy about being a Jew. That was a joke. Sorry. But it turned out that I was not a Jew. If I’d been a Jew, then I would be a second-wave Jew, a kind of a new-wave Jew, but anyway, I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out that I was really a Nazi, because my family is German. And that also gave me some pleasure. So, I, what can I say? I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things but I can see him sitting in his bunker. I’m saying that I think I understand the man. He is not what we could call a good guy, but yeah, I understand much about him and I sympathize with him … But come on! I’m not for the Second World War. And I’m not against Jews. No, not even Susanne Bier. I am very much for them. As much as Israelis are a pain in the ass. How do I get out of this sentence? Okay, I am a Nazi. As for the art, I’m for Speer. Albert Speer I liked. He was also one of God’s best children. He has a talent that … Okay, enough.”

The press seemed both shocked and entertained by Von Trier’s comments. Perhaps he was joking – but it seems like an off color joke, if that’s the case. Kirsten Dunst, who stars in von Trier’s new film, ‘Melancholia’ was mortified by his comments. She reportedly hid behind the director at one point and said “Oh, God!” in horror.

To top it off, he also offered that he was planning on making a long porn film with Dunst and co-star Charlotte Gainsbourg, and that perhaps his next film would be a movie take on “The Final Solution.”

After the press conference, he made sure to clarify to the Associated Press that he was largely kidding about his comments.

“”I don’t have so much to say, so I kind of have to improvise a little and just to let the feelings I have kind of come out into words,” von Trier said. “This whole Nazi thing, I don’t know where it came from, but you spend a lot of time in Germany, you sometimes want to feel a little free and just talk about this (expletive), you know?”

As for Melancholia, it’s in contention for the top prize, with critics raving about its take on the end of the world.

I cannot wait to see this movie! I don’t know why – but it looks so good to me! Watch the trailer here
