Kim Cattrall was disturbed by Samantha’s cancer storyline

Kim Cattrall

Kim Cattrall was worried when her character in the hit show was given a cancer storyline - because she feared writers were doling out a theoretical punishment.

The 51-year-old plays maneater Samantha Jones in the hit show and the character is famed for her rampant sexual appetite and her wild lifestyle.

And Cattrall feared that when the script saw Samantha suffering from breast cancer, it was the writers’ way of punishing her for her risque life choices.

She says, “I was nervous at first because it felt like some kind of punishment. Any woman who can do what she wants and say what she wants and sleep with who she wants in society is punished. From medieval times she was stoned or they cut her throat, ex-communicated or banished and branded her as a whore. There’s always been that throughout history, a woman must pay for that freedom.”

“I felt that giving this character cancer could have taken on this connotation and I was kind of upset — but the (writers) told me they were going to handle it in a unique way and script after script it just got better. And I was very grateful for that.”

Kim Cattrall was denied a role in a play over her age

Kim Cattrall

Kim Cattrall was turned down for a role in award-winning play Educating Rita because she was too old.

The 51-year-old was so desperate to land a part in the famous stage production - she personally contacted playwright Willy Russell to talk him into hiring her.

Cattrall was turned down over her age, with Russell insisting he would prefer a young actress in the title role.
But Cattrall is not bitter about the snub.

She says, “I contacted Willy Russell a few years ago because I wanted to do a version (of Educating Rita). The idea was to make it about a working-class woman in her 40s, a woman’s realization of herself and the different possibilities for her. But he said it had been written for an actress in her 20s, which I respected.”

Kim Cattrall is going to star in a new HBO series

Kim Cattrall

“Sex and the City” co-star Kim Cattrall is back at HBO with another sex-themed single-camera comedy project set in New York.

Cattrall is set to star in and executive produce an adaptation of the British comedy series “Sensitive Skin,” which is being written and exec produced by Emmy-winning “The Sopranos” scribes Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green.

The project, in development at the pay cable network with a significant penalty attached to it, centers on a middle-aged wife and mother (Cattrall) in New York who rediscovers her sexuality and begins to question her place in the world and the choices she has made in life.

The original series, which aired on BBC Two for two seasons, was written and directed by Hugo Blick and starred Joanna Lumley as a well-to-do ex-model working at an art gallery in London.

“Sensitive Skin” falls under a development deal Cattrall inked with HBO when she signed on for the “Sex and the City” feature.

Cattrall, Burgess, Green and Blick are exec producing with Henry Normal, whose Baby Cow Prods. was behind the British series.

This is the second post-”Sex and the City” collaboration between Cattrall and HBO. In 2005, she exec produced and starred in the documentary “Kim Cattrall: Sexual Intelligence.”

“Sensitive Skin” also marks the latest British format to make its way to HBO’s development slate, along with the comedy “Suburban Shootout,” which is shooting a pilot written by Michelle Ashford and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and the recently picked up drama “Bad Girls,” which is being adapted by Alan Ball, Nancy Oliver and Raelle Tucker.

Cattrall, who won a Golden Globe for her role as Samantha on “Sex and the City,” recently starred in the ITV telefilm “My Boy Jack” in her native England.

Kim Cattrall feared dating a younger man would make her seem like Samantha

Kim Cattrall

Kim Cattrall was so desperate to separate herself from her youth-obsessed character on the hit TV show, she initially turned down her current boyfriend’s advances because he was much younger than her.

The 51-year-old actress, who has been dating 29-year-old Canadian chef Alan Wyse since their meeting in 2004, plays maneater Samantha Jones on the hit TV series-turned-movie.

And she admits fears she would become more like her character in real life led her to have second thoughts about pursuing a romance with Wyse.

She explains, “I thought, ‘Am I copying Samantha? This is ridiculous. I can’t be doing this.’”

But Wyse’s persistence paid off. Cattrall adds of her beau, “He just would not take no for an answer and I’m so glad he didn’t.”

Kim Cattrall wants an SATC sequel

Kim Cattrall

The Sex and the City film hasn’t even premiered in New York City yet (it will tonight!), but Kim Cattrall is already looking toward the future.

“It was a blast to make and I hope we get to come back and make another,” Kim tells Extra.

While there hasn’t been a confirmation on a sequel, some of her co-stars are anticipating one, including Chris Noth.

“I imagine if it made a lot of money, they’d want one,” he said in March. “I don’t know where Sarah [Jessica Parker] stands on that,” he says. “It’s sort of up to her. I’m just riding her coattails!”

The movie opens this Friday, culminating months of press and promotion for Kim, Sarah, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. But it’s not like the 51-year-old minded any of it.

“Last night, I got about three hours of sleep, but it’s also euphoria because it’s been so well received,” Kim says. “The audience is so happy to see the girls back.”

Sex & the City’s security scare in London

Sex & The City cast

The cast of Sex and the City: The Movie were rocked by a security scare while they were visiting London to promote the new film - when a man sneaked into Kim Cattrall’s hotel suite.

Cattrall was conducting a press junket at the city’s prestigious Claridge’s Hotel along with castmates Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis when a crazed fan, posing as a foreign journalist, reportedly sneaked past security.

The man managed to get through several security checks to access the floor where all four actresses were staying. He then found his way into Cattrall’s room, where he is said to have cornered her alone - frightening the actress with his “erratic behavior”.

A source tells London newspaper Metro, “He was alone in a room with Kim Cattrall and began pestering her for autographs. She was very flustered, and it was lucky someone walked in and spotted him as his behaviour was getting more and more erratic.

“Hotel staff ordered him to leave but he didn’t go quietly. They bundled him out as quietly as possible but Kim was pretty frightened. The other girls found out what had happened and were also freaked out. But they’re old pros and they didn’t let it affect their schedules.”
